Description
... Alternately titled 'the Altamaran gila-cockroach-toad-thing'.I am legitimately regretting not giving these six limbs... But then again if Earth reptiles can have four, two, or no legs there's probably no reason these critters can't come in a six-legged variety.
That aside, these animals mainly fill the niche of reptiles on Earth, although there's some crossover with amphibians, and in larger specimens perhaps pigs. These guys are the sort of thing you'd find scuttling about under fallen leaves on the forest floor, or lurking dangerously in the mud in swamplands.
Biologically, although they look like reptiles as we'd understand them, their bodies are partially exoskeletal and composed of bony plates. Underneath the plates is flesh and bone, but they are otherwise completely devoid of skin.
In the side view you can see the spiracle breathing holes through which the animal respires. This along with the lower jaw being made of two fused mandibles is a common anatomical trait of Altamaran life.
... I find the grubs of these things the most exciting. Some of the larger, more self-sufficient sorts could act like huge ant-lion traps, or writhe about in swarms just under the surface of soft ground like piranha... Ready to strip the flesh off any unwary traveler.
these currently unnamed guys © me.

Kinda resembles the Bullette/landshark from D'n'D. Way cuter though!

These things are really neat!
Perhaps some species retain their grub state throughout their lives? Thinking of axolotls, where they retain juvenile characteristics. If these guys fulfill a variety of reptilian, amphibian and large insect niches, there'd be a lot of room for such diversity.

So basically they have a similar jaw structure to a tuatara? [link]

yes they do :3 although if I recall the tuatara has two rows of 'teeth'?
But yes though they weren't my main inspiration they are definitely comparable!

They kind of reminded me of the tuatara because of the fact that the teeth are actually fused to the jawbones.

Very nicely done, I always like seeing your anatomically correct creatures, Jesseth :3

what's a tohda? :3
I'm glad you like it! It's you and a few other's feedback that makes it worthwhile making all these things X'3

Hmm, I shoulda explained that. Watch an episode of "Erin" (Anime) or look up the show in art, and you should find Tohda's right away They're war-mounted lizards XD

What are their senses like?
I love this body structure!

Jesseth In reply to QuazarShark [2012-05-31 01:39:46 +0000 UTC]
I imagine their sense would vary a lot depending on species.. but generally I suppose their vision wouldn't be great (with some exceptions), so they'd rely heavily on smell, and maybe heat or electroreception? In the case of electroreception that may be more prevalent in more aquatic species, somewhat like eels and sharks. They could house the nerves for those in their big shovel-like heads. X3
Thank you!

They look cute, then I see the bigger ones and want to hide as high up as I can get. I DO NOT want to see that in a dark place without a big gun or something.
They're awesome! <3
