Description
I've been taking Sam Nielson's advanced lighting class, which is truly excellent ( [link] ), and this is one of my assignments. I was given a simple line drawing of the blue sphere, the glass cup and the grapes on a checkered plane, and then I had to paint it with a strong light source in order to understand the translucent properties of light (caustics, reflection and refraction, and sub-surface scattering). I tried to turn my composition into a table in a witch's cottage.Pretty pleased with how this game out, but man did it bend my brain.

Wow. Light through the tea glass, thicker glass of the potion bottle and grape leaves is just stunning, also so so difficult to do, my brain would bend too! It all looks so great. I really get the sense of the person the table belongs to as well.

Painting subsurface scattering....yugh! Rendering it is boggling enough.
Heh, that potion looks like a restore magica potion from skyrim.

It's amazing how something so simple, like a table with a few things, really isn't simple at all. I love the effort and detail you've put into this, the lighting must have been a killer. I'd love to take some class in lighting and learn it properly one day.

This is so inspiring!!! Wonderful work! My favourite is the potion bottle and the little light it casts with the shadow. I keep forgetting to do this in CG and I need to learn!

The glass cup is pretty fantastic! Not that the whole thing isn't great, just that golden glow really pops to me.

Does it have to come from multiple small children, or can it just come from one child? More bodies, more work, ya'know?

I know the focus is supposed to be the shadows and the reflection but....I find myself staring at the woodgrain of the windowframe. It looks phenomenal!

Oh, wow. This is absolutely gorgeous. The rendering is so smooth and the lighting and shading is so well executed that it almost looks like a still from a 3D animated film. Great job!

Fantastic! I think the only strong piece of critique I can offer is the shadow of the glass is a little too defined, but besides that, it's pretty spot on.

wow I like it a lot! I mean it's a simple scene, but there are so many difficulties concerning light. I guess you learned much while painting it!
