Description
I've been taking Sam Nielson's advanced lighting class, which is truly excellent ( [link] ), and this is one of my assignments. I was given a simple line drawing of the blue sphere, the glass cup and the grapes on a checkered plane, and then I had to paint it with a strong light source in order to understand the translucent properties of light (caustics, reflection and refraction, and sub-surface scattering). I tried to turn my composition into a table in a witch's cottage.Pretty pleased with how this game out, but man did it bend my brain.

Wheee!
*hrmph, accent on* Well, this indeed seems like a well spent part of your time if the results of that said class are as the one you show here. *accent off*

amazing how much lighting and shading can be done by following some rules. Sam Nielson is a master of it, I hope you get good marks from him
(still, painting this from life would have revealed so much more details of lighting...)

This is a painting? Holy smokes. It looked like something generated from a state-of-the-art 3D modeling program or something at first. Your practice with lighting certainly paid off; it's beautiful. I especially like the shadows.

This is cool! Did you use references or did you sort of just have an understanding from previous studies?

wow. it's amazing! really well done, you handled it really well. the glass with the juice(or whatver) in it looks really great! - wow. i didn't even know how i should begin with such.. did you really paint e.g. the reflection on the tablecloth of the glass by hand or did you use some warp /copy/paste and then edit?
ooh. and the textures.. so great.. (spezially love the detail on the list ^.^)
i'll have a look at that class! oooh great

hahhahha omg 1/2 cup of LITTLE CHILDREN??? haha funny stuff. the picture is very serene, and calm, relaxing. picture looks innocent enough, until you read the ingredients of the potion.

Oh my gosh this is GORGEOUS. I really love a good light study, and your handling of the textures turned out fantastic. I really love how you dealt with the amber glass there. The reflection is spot on. So crisp too; and great textures on the paper as well!

really nice feel to this, reminiscent of an old classic Disney cartoon from the 1930s or something

I love the recipe...so tell me...how do you get a 1/2 cup of little children? And what does the potion do?
Seriously, though it is an excellent composition of color and objects. It is amazing what can be artistly created with a computer. Thanks for sharing.

You have to chop the children finely, or use a grinder.
Thank you!

this is gorgeous! it's one of those paintings where i thought it was a picture when i first looked at it! i love the objects that you focused, but i also really love the grain and texture of the wood in that window, and the fantasy aspect to it (i just loooove fantasy settings <3). i think...for some reason the paper looks....heavy. if that makes sense. as opposed to light thin sheets. but i love the texture on that as well, and that it looks old and work at the edges. really awesome! *faves*

Awesome! There are some incredible lighting effects, but the best of them is the glass cup--I like the warmth of the relfection within and without. Very well done!
