It looks like he's about to eat the ladybug. like he's luring it in with a sweet smile before he snatches it out of the air.
Even though I can see past his cuteness I just wanna cuddle him.
I love his eye and face its lovely. As always awesome work

It's really lovely yet simple. I love the way the turtle is looking at the flying lady bug.

What a great gift to receive. <3 It is it card-sized? I love the texturized watercolor effect on the shell. That is pretty freaking cool.

I love the glossiness of the shell and scales. I'm so impressed that you're able to put that much detail in your work with watercolors. Very cute!

wow that is really cool, I like how it has a realistic look,....just wondering but do you look at photo's of the animals that you draw? or do you just draw it knowing what it's going to look like and how you draw and make it....did that make any since?

JessicaMDouglas In reply to GreenAngel5 [2007-09-21 22:40:10 +0000 UTC]
mmm it really depends? A photoreference is your absolute *best* friend to have, really. In this case I pulled up photographs of turtles and painted what I saw, kind of mushing different characteristics I liked about the various turtles into one, and so on with the lady bug. Sometimes I go to the zoo/aquarium and shoot reference photos. Other times I look up a specific *type* of wing, say for an angel? And then work off of reality. I must have... well I have a whole wall full of just wildlife books, plus a couple of flash drives with photographs in them organized by type of animal, coloring, etc. Sometimes I've drawn something *so* much, I can do it without any refs, but most of the time I'll still go back and look up the actual animal to see what i'm forgetting. There's these subtle details you don't think about when you're drawing without a reference in front of you that get lost.

yah that makes alot of sence....I know I do forget about those small details...I guess I should "really" start looking up things from now on...you really have convinced me to work harder on getting more realistic with drawing from real life, thanks

*awww....* now THAT's adorable! :3 so cute I like how you did the shell, particularly the very top one Now, do you matte these things so that the whitish border on this deviation is covered, or would you matte it so that its visible? or do you matte it at all o,O

JessicaMDouglas In reply to komaru6 [2007-09-21 22:41:49 +0000 UTC]
umm... well this one I just handed to the guy as is. He's lucky I squeezed it into my freakish schedule as it is! *shakes a fist at him in case he reads this* Buuut that aside, if I was framing it, personally I'd cover the white border. I'm not fond of them at all. I used to be, because I kind of like the wavery line the tape makes with the paint, but that fondness faded quickly. It's all a matter of personal preference, in the end.

well, thats a good point- make it look good for you, not for others! unless they are requesting stuff.
either way it was nice of you to squeeze him in, especially with such a cute picture :3 you... put tape on the picture to stop it from bleeding all over the border? It would work, but wouldn't it mess up the paper? I guess not, obviously, or you wouldnt use it o,O

artist's tape. It's literally called 'artist's tape'. You can get it at art supply and crafting stores, it's white, very low tack and ... I'm not sure it it's acid free or just very low acid. But it peels off easily. I also don't paint on paper I paint on crescent 100 illustration board.

..is that like bristol board? Pthpthpth I wanna live near a place that sells art supplies, but I live in a small town.. no Its not even a town, its a village i think, its too small to be a town, so... theres like 10 tourist shops and a drugstore, and a grocery store, and needs.

JessicaMDouglas In reply to komaru6 [2007-09-23 16:22:30 +0000 UTC]
uh... no. It's actually a hard sheet of board, like... well crap I can't explain it. Sorry hun, I can't help you too much if you don't have an art supply store. Try looking at the dick blick website.

Turtles are <3. ^^ Nicely done again. Looks like the kind of turtle that would fool you into picking it up and kissing it so that it could bite your face off. (I've had it happen.)
