Description Original "Shi" created by Billy Tucci, a friend of my grandfather's. I just really liked the use of color in this character.

Ah the exquisite and articulate beauty of the Kabuki theatrical performer. A staple of Japanese culture, the Kabuki stage performers would appear before a crowd of eager and patient patrons, wearing a stellar pallet of makeup with very distinctive markings upon their faces as well as using simple yet bright and vivid colors. They would then perform before the audiences with heavily stylized dance-dramas easily enticing the crowds with their beautifully executed and choreographed dancing and graceful motions about the stage floor, tickling their fancies with virtually no effort and leave them pleased and begging for more. Within itself, the passion and showmanship displayed by the Kabuki actors and actresses were more than enough of an art form to stand alone by themselves. However, when introduced into the many other forms of media that exist in this world, you take something well established in history and immortalize it into something that is truly a thing of beauty. Shi created by *JessicaMQ, shows us her depiction of a character with the familiar distinctions that are reminiscent of the Kabuki performer but, within adding her own personal twist to it, breathes new life into this concept and allows it to soar to the artistic stratosphere.

As with many pieces in this style the general appearance is what immediately caught my attention. True, I am not exactly familiar with the subject matter that this character is based on, but one can easily see that such information is inconsequential to admire such a piece as this. The simple use of red, blue and pure white across the character's face perfectly embodies the artistic nuances of the Kabuki appearance. The subtle shadow effects underneath the nose and the general perimeter of her face looks outstanding.

The highlights upon her glowing emerald eyes and silken hair quickly and firmly grasp the arm of the viewer's attention and gives no signs of letting that hold go. Even some of the most miniscule hairs on the subject's head are not forgotten and genuinely make you feel as though the character is standing before you; her statuesque beauty and perfectly sculpted facial feature entice you to gaze upon her and never break that gaze.

A piece such as this is still not without flaws though. As with many pieces colored with pencils, some parts of the colored areas could be filled in more thoroughly, perhaps with a heavier lead perhaps. In addition, as much of the character's face is white, you should feel more obligate to focus on more of the character's facial details. Cheekbones should be more pronounced, lines under the eyes and perhaps even subtle wrinkles to show age or to deepen expression are some of the things you could do to bring more personality into the piece and stand out even further than it does in its current state.

On its own, the piece stand up quite well. Its various elements bring the composition to life and has a strange life-like aura about it that just draws ones eyes upon it. Do not forget that there is nothing wrong with adding further detail and bring out even more beauty from such a piece. Good work nonetheless. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/c/c… " width="20" height="20" alt="" title="Clap"/>

Think she would be dangerous... and interesting to know. Though got to watch for the change that might come in her eyes - and to be ready - to move out of her way.
