Hey there! From Project comment~
First off, holy moly xβD literally 10years!! Ah well, at least itβs actually been finished~
Your style of shading is actually quite realistic and creates some interesting textures- which is what caught my attention. Especially like how you shade the fabric. Itβs wavy and mottled in some areas but the values read quite well and you can see and feel how the fabric flows. It really does help the viewer to understand the costume well β light-ish/colourful/smooth fabric mixed with other stuff like stones/feathers? Anyhow, I think you definitely did a good job on using your costume reference!
The thing that irked me a bit was the characterβs face. Now that I think about it it might be a mask.-. yup, probably is lol- again, was able to figure this out because the values on the costume was especially well done. Think the proportions of the mask could be improved- the nose seems very thin (although not totally unrealistic). The harsh edges of the mouth make it look quite flat (even if it is painted onto the mask) as well as because of the harsh lighting > > Otherwise, your portrait is spot-on!
Also, did you use a filter to adjust the colours? Just curious- I think you used it well Β

Thank you for the review Kyorukki!
Yes, I actually lost it for some time ... Then when I found it in some papers, I thought I should work more on it.Β
It is one of the Venice Carnival costumes, and yes, its a mask. I think you made some good points there about the nose.Β
I don't think I used any filters on it, but it was 5 years ago, so not 100% sure.
Thank you again for the kind words, and keep on creating!

Damn started this in 09 haha. Definitely had quite a bit of time to work on it. Still it is good to finish something old at a later date! Having the practice of finishing a piece is good experience so good job on that. It is quite nice with its values for the most part, however I feel the focal area which is the mask could use some lighter values. As it is right now It's a bit hard to tell what is going on at the top of the piece at first glance. The area above her forehead with the flower for instance almost seemed recessed back as if it were the wall behind her. It could just be my eyes messing with me still but a bit more darker values up in those shadow areas, like the ones on the bottom right, could really solidify the cloth up top. As I said before with the mask being the focal point I feel the highlight on the left side isn't quite shining correctly. It appears to be a white mask and in that case with the highlighted area you could utilize the white of the paper or at least make it a bit lighter in value then it is now. It wants to stand out and grab attention but it's simply a bit too much on the darker side currently. Still beautiful though!

Thank you very much for the critique! It was very weird to work on something I started years ago! You gave some sound advice, and I agree. Always thought something is not quite right, but couldn't decide on it, but I think that just might be it!Β

It's funny how we where figurative masks to hide ... and yet, they are so revealing. Β Beautiful piece.

Thank you very much for liking my work! Β
We all have a set of masks ...but just imagine what would happen if we lost them all?
