STORY

On a sunny afternoon when class had ended and all the kelings dispersed to spend their free time the way they pleased, Brie liked to take the long walk down to the shore, it always felt nice to feel the sand between her toes. Her siblings wouldn’t join her today, as it was winter and “too cold” to go to the beach, but the weather hadn’t been too icy today!

A smile spread across her face as she saw that the water wasn’t frozen over, she had to enjoy it while it was still available to her. Brie giggled and bounded into the frigid ocean water, sending a shiver up her body from her feet to the tip of her ears. She spent a good hour or so splashing and swimming about in the cold water until she dragged herself back onto the shore, shaking like a leaf as she did, though a bright beaming grin was plastered on her face.

“Brie? Were you just swimming?” Came a voice from afar, Brie’s smile widened to what could only be assumed it’s max as she saw Parasol, holding a small basket in her mouth.

“Y-y-y-yeah! I-I uhhhhhh c-c-couldn’t help myself, y’know?” Brie chattered, a shaky giggle escaping her throat, though Parasol only returned a somewhat concerned, lopsided smile.

“You’ll catch your death doing that, Brie. You should really wait for warmer days.” Parasol said softly, putting her basket down and pulling from it a blanket, walking over to wrap it around Brie’s shoulders. “Sit down by the grass and warm up for a bit.” The softspoken keling directed, and Brie gave a shaky nod in reply.

While Brie sat and warmed up, she watched as Parasol walked back and forth, picking up seashells and seaglass, helping the odd critter get back to the water as she did. She took note of the way her pretty red fur waved in the wind and how her unique two coloured eyes sparkled with anticipation. Brie wondered what she was waiting for?

As the sun began to set over the ocean, golden light glittering across the waves, Parasol sighed contentedly and sat beside Brie, her basket now full of trinkets. She got comfortable and leaned her head back to enjoy the cool, salty ocean breeze that tousled her soft, coral red fur.

“Like, thanks for the blanket, Sol.” Brie hummed, sitting on her haunches and wrapping the blanket around herself with her front claws. Parasol smiled and chuckled, reaching up to mess with her hair tuft.

“It’s not a problem at all, I wouldn’t want you to get ill.” Parasol said, before she pulled her full basket towards her, rooting around until she pulled out an absolutely beautiful shell necklace. “I made this for you, out of the shells I found the day we first met.” She said, presenting the jewelry to her friend. Brie’s face lit up, blue eyes sparkling as she took the necklace into her claws.

“Wow… this is, like, so sweet of you, Parasol! Wow…” She whispered, putting the necklace on and grinning ear to ear, her face buzzing with warmth. “Thanks so much. This is, like, sooo perfect! I love it.” Parasol blushed at Brie’s excited gushing, a little embarrassed by her enthusiasm.

“I’m glad you like it… but you don’t have to wear it if you don’t want to.” Parasol said bashfully, scuffing her paws against the sand. Brie tilted her head sweetly and scoffed lightheartedly.

“What? I’m, like, gonna wear this every single day of my life!” Brie nearly sang with joy as she looked down at the soft, sandy peach shells around her neck, tied with hemp string and colourful wooden beads. She thought it couldn’t be more perfect.

As Brie leaned against Parasol’s shoulder in a sort of side hug, the two watched the sun set, large and hopeful in a cloudless sky, past the coastline, stars peeking out of the blue-purple that trailed behind the sun’s red glow. Soon, Parasol would drag Brie out of the cold and back to her siblings, but for now, they would savour this moment.
