My take on these creatures

A Genetically engineered monstrosity created by scientists, the Consumer, as it is known, is a living garbage disposal with stomach acid that can melt steel, teeth that can rip through stone and foul breath that can sand blast walls. Kept in concrete pens far away from urban population centers, these poor souls are all that is left of terrorists, thieves, martyrs, corrupted politicians and criminal scum, some innocent, some guilty, some simply unlucky.

With the fast approach of ecological ruin following decades of drought brought by increasing temperatures, ruins of city sized scale following increasingly deadly natural disasters, and countless wars fought over dwindling resources, humanity had no other recourse. Scientists used genetic engineering, biological reconfiguration and a genome-mutating virus to create a new breed of pig - made by humans, that consumed and recycled waste, debris and toxic materials.

The Method through which they are created is as cruel as cruel can be. The victim, usually a life sentence convicted felon or repeat offender, is sent to a farm where these creatures are 'born'. The victim is stripped, washed and then dipped in a huge vat of an as yet, undetermined squishy, sloshy green liquid. The victims are left to soak for a few days, and when they get out, they have completely mutated into a stable, fat, mindless beast that can be easily controlled and wrangled to where it needs to go.

Kept in pens when not needed, they sit still grunting to themselves or trying to gnaw at the walls of their pens, or wander aimlessly biting at the stale, fetid air that surrounds them. When released, theyre wrangled like sheep to a spot where they bite down and swallow like cattle in a field, gnawing at everything from shattered TVs, sucking down human waste or feeding on corpses and debris for the purposes of cleaning it up. For what its worth, they actually do the job well, allowing the toxic wastes they feed on to be slowly reclaimed by human or animal life.

When returned to their holding pens after a feeding, the things theyve eaten are processed by their stomachs and turned into a horrid, putrid green sludge that is ejected from the usual orifices, and harvested by workers. This putrid ooze is purified using special, closely guarded means and turned into a potent fertilizer that can help any plant of any kind grow to full size in a matter of days, or it can be laced with potent chemicals to create the next generation of Consumers.

I feel you've adequately captured the horror of humanity's sedentary lifettyle.I don't think this will humanity's fate, because of our two potential futures.

One potential future involves climate disaster. We won't be docile blobs because will be forced to fight for survival in a toxic world.

The other is humanity overcoming environmental disaster. Modern medicine has made everything cheap. Most likely, technology will be more likely to enhance ourselves cheaply. And people will most likely enhance themselves to look like supermodels and athletes.Β

I want to say that some humans were born into consumerism.

I believe that these six Humanoids have been breed-ed by farmers to become cattle for Cannibalistic Foodies.
IT CAN HAPPEN!

Impressive, filled to the brim with horror and nausea yet packed with skin-crawling meaning. Nice work!

Also, is it just me, or does the hoof feet, squishy fat-covering skin, and squalid conditions ringed by what looks to be a prison camp fence reminding anyone else of some sort of creepy horror film concept involving human "cattle" or "pigs" for slaughter?
