Description The Scorpion is a first generation infantry support robot. It was built to work with normal soldiers, not replace them altogether, and like most automated systems performs the dull and dangerous tasks most sentient creatures would want to avoid. Groups of attacking Scorpions can move ahead of a main force to draw fire from enemies, and when defending territory they can serve as tireless guards. For more politically sensitive missions they can be remotely controlled, leaving difficult decisions to their human operators.

No system is without a foil, and Scorpions can be neutralised through old methods like EMPs or turned against their operators through advanced computer hacking. When these threats are nonexistent – or identified and countered in time – Scorpions are more effective and provide a strong foundation for future robot generations.

Cool, 99% of "scorpion" mechs look exactly like a scorpion, this one has a nice simplistic design

The recoil from that rifle would make that bot very inaccurate in automatic fire mode. Coupled with the apparently limited magazine capacity i'm guessing this drone is more for sniper type situations.

There's a lot here that could be improved.

For some reason the idea of the lugs on the feet for extra attachments sold me on this, love it.

I like the handle on the back, is there a winch back there too?

Maybe for the next version make the front camera a gimble assembly.. more of a turret design for the gun? That gun is going to wreck the arm in no time

flying drone can operate only for short time (fuel, battery), is noisy and can bring less payload.

Flying drones would be more useful overall. Current "infantry" robots like the SWORDS and MAARS systems might also do the job better, but I felt like trying something a bit more technically challenging/visually interesting. This design still owes a lot to real ones from Boston Dynamics.

Quite a good design.  I'd wonder how much horsepower it might have, and if it'd be able to haul a soldier in a stretcher from the rear grab bar.  Or even a trailer of gear.

A great reply! Bigdog was one of my main inspirations. I saw the first clips years ago but it's still an unnerving sight. The Wildcat's also worth a look if you haven't seen it already. It might seem a little morbid but I find this stuff fascinating.

It's creepy all right, just the thing for your style. I can just imagine walking alone through some bleak wilderness, only to hear a strange, buzzing sound, then turning around and seeing THAT THING stalking you. Slowly, patiently, but always on the move. It's like the monster from It Follows made by some over-mechanized, dystopian future.

That's some scary imagery. I'll definitely run a search on "It Follows" after this. If you haven't read it already, you'd probably enjoy Philip K Dick's short story "Second Variety." I can take or leave a lot of his work but that one really stayed with me. It's got to be one of the bleakest sci fi stories in existence!

For a militrary machine, it has a weak front. The legs and the turret connections seems to be very vulnerable. Maybe for later generations you may add some defense to cover the weak limbs or something which could be used to cover the turret since, with only shot this machine could be turned useless.  Maybe the turret could be placed lower or at least giving it a front plate so it could hide the connection from frontal assault(suggestion, give it a  gun-rest similar to real  life artillery. Also for  a better realistick vibe, might suggest  a ammo armored box near the gun.

jflaxman In reply to Jinksa [2015-04-22 01:10:41 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure a lot could be improved. As Hellsmechanic's already said this is a G1 machine and viewers are free to give suggestions or take this concept further!

Many modern infantry weapons have no problem dealing with much larger and better armoured machines, and I imagine smaller robots will rely more on speed and cover for survival. You've made some good suggestions though. An artillery-style gun rest could carry more powerful weapons and an armoured ammo hopper also makes a lot of sense. We've already seen similar on the SWORDS and MAARS systems.

Jinksa In reply to jflaxman [2015-04-22 05:22:44 +0000 UTC]

Well but there is a little bit of questioning to add to the designs.

If you want to go to the Mars type of robot have in mind that its a exploration  SLOW vehicle which is very fragile. For a war you need something more robust Like the SWORDS. But have in mind that the swords is a weapon platform, which means its used as a bullet sponge with interchangeable basic military weapons.

If you want  a more agile robot, have in mind THAT IT WILL BE MORE expensive then the bullet spunge and you will need to give it somekind of way to avoid blasts which would topple it and send it flying. Suggestion, make the legs spikes which will impale their self into the ground so the robot can ground it self. Also lose the armor since its going to be  runner so it will be  a smaller target.

If you want a actual future Swords weapon platform I might suggest making it taller with thick frontal armor so the troops can use it as cover and  a quick Street bullet blender. For this approach you might wanna forget the heavy weapons and go for more troop weapons which can be more easily replaced if damaged and a accessible back since it will act as support/tank for the incoming infantry. Also you could place 2 thick plates on the front 2 legs to form a connectable sloped shield when its ordered to hold a position. Also for this idea you can make a bigger carrying compartment so it will be as well a supply depo for the troops.

You can utilize both designs ideas to make robot fighting unit.  1 armored swords type and 3-5 smaller spider Mars striker

German engineering during WW2 is a case in point! Some of it was brilliant in theory but the Russians and Americans did much more with it in practice. I'm not sold on flying saucers, but the Horten flying wings, the Weserflug P.1003 tiltrotor and the STG 44 assault rifle were ideas far ahead of their time.

5,000 Scorpions shouldn't be hard, and I bet they'll be just the thing for dealing with those pesky rebels!

Yes, the Horten "Nurflügler"... i think, a few years
ago American Engineers have reconstructed one of them to
test it's Anti-Radar capabilitys. With suprisingly high succes!

And yes... i will crush those Rebels!
