The Type 09 is a wheeled self-propelled 155mm howitzer created by Yongsheng Heavy Machinery Industries. First tested in early 2008 and commissioned in late 2009, it is a modernized derivative of the Type 88 self-propelled 152mm howitzer.

The vehicle is armed with a 155mm howitzer that is mounted externally between two separated compartments of the turret. In this way the crew is completely isolated from potentially dangerous gun and autoloader mechanisms and is protected from the powder gasses generated during firing. The Type 09 is fitted with an autoloader while a total of 40 rounds are carried onboard with ammunition stored in conveyors. Firing range is around 31.4 km, which can be extended to 42.6 km using rocket assisted projectiles. Automatic rate of fire is 6 rounds per minute while manually it is reduced to 2 rounds per minute. Capable of Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact Firing (MRSI), the howitzer can launch a couple of projectiles at different trajectories in order for them to hit a target simultaneously. Apart from the 155mm howitzer, the Type 09 is also armed with a roof-mounted 12.7mm heavy machine gun, which is remotely-controlled by the commander.

The artillery system has an automatic gun-laying mode, with firing data calculated by the onboard computer and the gun is laid on the target automatically. The crew consists of a commander, gunner, loader and driver, and the system features a high level of automation.

The Type 09 uses spaced, multi-layered composite armor formed by spacing multiple layers of ceramics, plastic composites and kevlar, reinforced with high-hardness steel and tungsten sandwiched between the layers of the armor. Inside the vehicle is an automatic fire-extinguishing system with sensors that activate several halon fire bottles, which can also be activated manually by the driver.
