Description Electric Powered Bolt Launcher.
Powered by a car battery, probably worn in a sling across the back, this device can hurl a sharpened bolt at ranges up to 50m with lethal force.

A small electric motor spins the front four wheels to provide the momentum. The trigger releases a small spring loaded firing pin, which slams the bolt from the canister into the barrel and wheel system. The firing pin has to be manually pulled back before each shot.

Interesting design indeed. The height of the front sight is a little odd to me especially without a rear sight. You might think about making the tall sight at the rear and shortening the front. All projectile weapons drop quickly with range therefore you usually need to raise the front of these weapons. Cool design though.

Yeh I was thinking of putting a grnade launcher sight on it, forgot though :S

Oh I love this I haven't seen anything like this since I watched Van Helsing except this seems way more realistic than that. Although it probably would have been better to use a crossbow style instead of an electric motor because honestly keeping up with a battery is a hassle not to mention the added weight, but none the less this definitely has perked my interest in your work, hope to see more from you.

Thanks heaps man
Yeh, couldn't think of how to make it as fast to load and fire as the motor, I had another idea for a crossbow that fired bolts wired to a car battery, kinda like the one out of Halflife 2, but with a wire cable connecting the bolt and the battery, it would've taken ages to reload though :S

Ah yes the electric crossbow from half life 2 was a very interesting weapon although it seemed to be a prime example of overkill (lets be honest if you get hit by a foot long piece of steel your probably not going to get back up), but none the less it was still quiet an interesting investment. Your design is an interesting idea but one that I myself would not see as practical because as you stated in the description the firing pin has to be manually reset, if I had the choice I would chose a regular crossbow, true I would have to reload after each release but that is a small amount of energy that I believe I could spare (plus a car battery is a bitch to carry around everywhere). Its a cool idea but a questionable design (if you didn't have to reset the firing pin every time I would think differently).

Yeh, I didn't want to make it too convenient of a weapon to have though, being in a post-apocalyptic setting I wanted it to be a bit of a bitch lol, but something I'd rather have than not..

On a side note I can't wait to see it coloured and distressed!!

Just thinking, you could have the motors wind back the firing pin, it would take a second maybe but it could easily be rigged to fire up to 15 shots a minute. The design is awesome, I've been doodeling something similar myself but seeing this I'll stop and just pay yours homage! Another this i just thought of, are the bolts secured in the magazine by sprung pin or friction? Just thinking as it flumoxed me, when you point it down the bolts might come out?!

Jholliday In reply to ArturiusMaxwell [2010-07-10 10:44:35 +0000 UTC]

Thats a good idea, thanks dude.
I thought of like a small magnet holding the bolts on the cylinder, nt strong enough to prevent the firing process

ArturiusMaxwell In reply to Jholliday [2010-07-10 18:29:54 +0000 UTC]

Well if you have a magnetic switch, a half second delay in the pin hitting the bolt and the trigger releasing the pin it can settle in the barrel and then get knocked without any major abrassion to the rifling inside.
Also the de magnetizing of the bolt lined up with the trigger asembly could also work for barrel rotation, when the pin reactivates magentically it could set a gear in motion rotating the wheel bringing the next bolt in line... each bolt section having a magnetic tag to stop the rotation.

That is more mechanics than design and the killer is with the rotation of your pullies and gears you could produce a small recharge per shot to the battery. It almost makes me wish I could draw sometimes... meh.
The only down side I can see is the need to replace the magnetic metal to stop degredation of the charge and the wiring would need anchored and house inside tubing to ensure it wasn't cut by accidentally applying pressure if you tripped or were pinned by an enemy. Corrosion of the conectors is another issure easily solved with a plastic cap or inbuilt housing. Jeez your concept really is bringing the theoretical in me!!

I say two thumbs up to your design!!

Haha, kinda makes me wish I could remake the rifle showing all of that, but I was never good at anything mechanical :S
Cheers for the props though

Nice modeling work. I like how you've incorporated a traditional looking rifle stock with a futuristic weapon design. It looks dope.
