Description
Gingko 杏林 2004 oil on canvas, 30 × 30 in.The gingko is one of my favorite trees: its beautiful leaves are like little fans. Two thousand years ago, Confucius taught his students under the branches of this tree, so for me it has always been a symbol of elegant scholarship, related to learning and scholarship. As the sole living link between the lower and higher plants, between ferns and conifers, the gingko only survived in monasteries in China and Japan before it was brought to Europe in 1691.

I love the delicacy of this painting: her pose, the way she's holding the leaf, her thoughtful expression and her beautiful red dress. I also like the meaning behind this piece: a beautiful homage to culture and philosophy.

The Gingko is my favorite tree too. Its just so calming somehow. Its unique compared to trees today, I love the fan shape, it has an asian quality to it in my mind, and its just so ancient. Its just so special to hold in your hand a leaf that is the same as so many ancient fossilized remains, and has outlasted a changing world and so many species that have evolved and died off.

the Gingko is also my favorite tree. we had one growing in are garden when i was a boy in Kansas. it was the most perfectly symmetrical tree i had ever see surrounded by 200 year old elms. its beautiful yellow color in the fall made it stand out. i always saw it as a magical tree. your work is incredible. out of all the works i have see i think you are possibly one of the finest painters on DA. if i was not so poor i would defiantly seek your work out for perches.

This is gorgeous. You could sell these types of paintings for a ton at a local art fair or something - this one in particular reminds me of a painting my great-grandmother owned, only I actually like yours better
