Description This is a Commission peice for ~Jayetta . She wanted me to do a poster sized Fanart of Drizzt Do'Urden, and his Giant black panther companion, Guenhwyvar ...

for those of you NOT familiar with the stories by R.A. Salvatore, and more particularly, the cannon artwork gracing most of the covers. ... Drizzt does wear all that, lots of black leather armor, long green cape, and the white furr ruff .... thing.... (... I swear, he makes Sephiroth look like an amature in the black leather department. )

Guenhwyvar, is described as a 600 lbs Magical/Astral Panther.

The coloring was ... time-consuming... with the particular challenge being to differenciate the different varieties of black leather. (supple leather, hard armor leather, belt leather, boot leather... ) and of course, both the Drow and the Panther have black skin as well. metal also uses the grey monochromatic hues, ... It was an interesting challenge to play with that much "grey" and still make it different.

I tried something a bit different with the background, it's supposed to look JUST A LITTLE cartoony, illustration-ey... whatever. Since Drizzt and Guen both have some exagerated colors and contrast, I figured the background would do well with the same.

all in all, I'm actually rather pleased with it. ^_^ I'll probably upload a pic of the backround by itself later.

Anyways, this IS an 11x17 poster sized piece.

and it will also be converted into an 8.5x11 size print as well

both sizes are available for sale. ^_^

Lol. XD

You're right, ... I had to put him down about half-way through and I think I forgot which way I'd wanted the light to come from. I forgot to mark it down like I've been trying to do.

Thank you, I hadn't really noticed as much for the background, but now that you point it out, I see it.

I should use the lamp technique more often. :3

ambient light is always just a little trickier than direct light.

Thanks so much for the critique.

You're welcome ^_^ I was a little worried I'd sound too blunt or something. D: Goodness knows I make the same mistakes too often to count. ^^

Psh, If you want "blunt" You'd need to talk to my "Character and Object Design" Teacher, ... HE was blunt, and HARSH... loved to start out in-class critiques with "Who owns this peice of crap?"

XD but his class was fun, and I learned ALOT!

anyways, I can take just about any critique you dish, and I'm just as blunt myself, so it's all good.

it was a nicely, well-rounded critique too, which was good. ^_^

No worries, I appreciated it!

He said that to everyone though, so it got pretty funny. ^_^

He was one of the better teachers I had, he wasn't afraid to rip an art-piece apart where it deserved it, but he offered praise just as quickly where it was warranted.

Yep! just takes some practice and self-discipline. You don't have to listen to everything but I try to make a habit of looking at it first, and taking it into consideration... because even if I don't think it applies where they might suggest, alot of critiques are useful to think about for other pieces too. (WHY does it look that way to them? ect...)

another one is to always remember that they're trying to help. ^_^ even if you don't agree with what they say. So remember to thank them. :3

those will help you alot to take critiques.

You're very welcome! I like getting critiques too, and I give them sometimes when I can. (I don't often have enough time anymore unfortunately. )

I hope it helps!

Same goes for all of them! It's almost impossible not to love Drizzt, Guen, Cattie-Bri, Bruenor, Regis, Wulfgar, Thibbledwarf Pwent and his Gut Busters, the Harpells, Cadderly and Danica along with Ivan and Pikel Bouldershoulder, even Jarlaxle, Artemis, and Athrogate. They all just become a part of you, and if something happens to either one of them (even for a brief period, and you know it's going to be ok) a part of you is always saddened, and it feels like their's something missing.

Tigeradventure45 In reply to Jianre-M [2014-06-16 21:16:39 +0000 UTC]

It is. If I had all the books, I'd re read them all. Technically I still can, I just have to finish the Elminster book i'm on first, and I can only get so far before I have to re order them from the library.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jianre-M In reply to Tigeradventure45 [2014-06-19 16:56:37 +0000 UTC]

understand that. XD that's how I read them too.

Tigeradventure45 In reply to Jianre-M [2014-06-19 17:16:56 +0000 UTC]

At least I didn't have to order most of them. I have all the way up to The Two Swords, so I didn't need to order much. Just the transistions series and Promise of the Witch King, and Road of the Patriarch that deal with Jarlaxle, Artemis, and Athrogate. The Cleric Quintet series I have too so I read them (after I was done with what I had with Drizzt, not knowing at the time that the Cleric Quintet series was about Cadderly and Danica, and the Bouldershoulder brothers.

Tigeradventure45 In reply to Jianre-M [2014-06-19 21:47:02 +0000 UTC]

They were. They're more entertaining than the Elminster series. Don't get me wrong they are really good, but it's just not as exciting, it'll take me months on end to finish one book of those cause I just don't feel like reading it.

I don't like it... I absolutely freaking LOVE it... I did want to ask, would you mind if I saved a copy and used it for the background on my computer desktop? This is one of the better illustrations of Drizzt and Guen I've seen ever. And trust me, I've looked at practically all of them.. sigh... google image search ... heh, anyways, R.A. Salvatore is one of my favorite writers, and I think I just added you to the mental category of best artists. I enjoy the cartoonish but not really styles.. if that made any sense whatsoever.

... Is the file big enough for a computer desktop? ... if not, let me know and I'll see if I can optimize one for ya. If so, go right ahead.

I loved the books! they were so much fun! XD (and I've done that google image search too... for references. :3 )

Yes it makes sense. ^_^ I'm glad you like it/love it/Are enjoying it.

My room mate commented on it the other day, he walks in and was talking animated about something and just stops mid sentace and points. "Dude, That's drizzt!" I squeeled and promptly told him about the awesome deviantart artist that drew it. ERm.. anywho, thanks again!

Hmm I don't have a premium membership but I'll give you a critique anyway.

A wonderful job as always on the force the action of the poses. You always do so well in making your characters look like they are in motion, something hard to do and I always struggle with.

You also did a good job of distinguishing the different types of leather and metal.

What you can work on is that everything looks evenly lit which is great if you are doing a model sheet or a character sheet where you want to see every detail of the character. In a piece like this however the lighting needs to create a mood. Don't be afraid of the dark large areas of shadow are necessary, especially with this picture which is a bright cloudless day ([link] ) The juxtaposition of bright highlights and deep shadows create the feel of a bright sunny day.

Well it seems you've got the harder thing (motion) down and just need to work on the mood.Keep painting.

Thank you! I tend to struggle with lighting myself. but it's nice to hear I have strong points too.

WOW!! How did I not see this before! D8 This is absoulutely amazing! The poses are epic, and the little details you have in this pic is pure genius; it actually looks like the two of them are in motion! The green eyes and snarly expression of the panther is to die for, the man's long silver hair is simply gorgeous, and I am absolutely loving the background!

Fantastic! Instant fav!! xD
