Except Bartleby wasn't a villain. He was a neutral party. Loyal to both Robotnik and to Sonia. It almost makes you wonder what it would have been like if the story had been told from his point of view. Torn between his beloved Sonia and his loyalty to Robotnik. They could even use him to show a different side to Robotnik, to flesh out his character.
