I'd imagine Mai and Katsuya's first date to be a really awkward affair - things going wrong, random people showing up that you don't want to show up, general first-date-uneasiness around each other, you name it.
Particularly since it would probably take place in the context of, or right after a Duel Monsters Tournament, which means all the main players would be there; the ones meaning well (and failing), the old rivals, the people who'd mock them relentlessly (I'm looking at you, Kaiba) etc...
Add to that their general insecurities of:
- "Omg, but he's so much younger/she's so much older than me, how will that look?!"
- "Shit, by calling this a Date we've officially transitioned from Friend-I-have-a-crush-on to This-is-something-that-rates-a-TERM!"
- "After all that happened, CAN we even date...?"

and you have a really nice RomCom-Dramedy á la Dramacon (by Svetlana Chmakova), or the first dates of Lane/Zach and Lorelai/Luke from Gilmore Girls.
Basically that friend you've known forever by now, and there's always been this underlying something, but fate was a bitch and never let you seal the deal, and now you're on a DATE all of a sudden - omg how did this happen?!?

I left the background very blank and minimalist on purpose this time (was originally going to be Domino City Plaza), because SHOULD I ever draw that doujinshi, this will be the cover.
