Story
Timeskip and his sister Mariah were born to a single mother, a woman who was incredibly intelligent and independent. Much against the law of Mernia, she never reported the fraternal twins' births, and she never had them registered as Mernian citizens. She lived in the heavily polluted Rocky Mountains alone, raising the kids away from civilization. When they were old enough to understand, she told them that "this time isn't for you two. You don't belong here, not if I can help it."
Their mother knew the pollution had a negative effect on the kids, but the only one who showed it was Mariah. Although she was incredibly sweet and selfless, she simply didn't think as fast in situations. Her reaction speed and reflexes were almost half of her brother's, and stress made her critical thinking falter. Because of this, their mother always gave more control to Skip.
When they reached thirteen, their mother had fallen awfully ill with a disease that they'd later learn to be called ephemeral. Her bodily functions seemed to crash overnight. Things were glum, there being no cure in hand, and so she trusted the kids with something she meant to keep from them until they were adults. Time-travel goggles. One pair held all the control, the other pair was a passenger seat of sorts. She trusted Timeskip with the controller pair. Wherever he chose to go in the past, as long as Mariah wore hers, she'd follow.
She passed away that night, and although Mariah didn't want to leave, Skip knew that they didn't stand much chance in the wild without their mother. He urged Mariah to join him in fleeing to Mernia's City of Refuge and Safety. With a name like that, how could anything go wrong there? A lot, apparently, when you're illegal citizens holding very illegal time-travelling gear.
They were very quickly outlawed when they were seen entering a shop, and they couldn't give their city registration codes. As they were being cornered by police, Timeskip whipped Mariah's goggles onto her head, and then put his own on, without any clue of how they worked. He remembered his mother telling him to "blink, blink three times if you're in trouble. I've set it to a safe place if you blink three times." And so he did. The goggles registered the spazmatic blinking, and warped them to London, England, 2010.
