Description A friend inspired me to do a few tests and after a few hours I ended up with this. The dispersion (rainbow light splitting) effect is created with DAZ Studio's Uber Iray shader Abbe setting.

Wow, that is beautiful! Are the prisms on a curved surface? That looks like a rough surface but I thought there had to be surface reflection. Tricky... And I have no clue what is the light source or sources. The mystery is a big part of the beauty.

Thank you so much for the kind words. After our chat about caustics I thought I needed to test some things out. The surface is a flat plane, but the focal length of the camera is quite low, so it gives the scene a curved look. And indeed, the ground surface is fairly rough. That's one of the things I was keen to test out. The light sources are all on screen (if I recall right there were four spotlights), but I made them very small and carefully arranged so that their absence (once I cloned brushed them out in PS) wouldn't look too weird.

Incorporating noise into the primitive surfaces seems to be a big part of creating interesting diversity with the caustics. This can be either added to the geometry, or with a bump texture map. Here I used the "jitter" tool in lightwave with a small offset, so the models are quite high polly
