THE BEST WALLPAPER OF THE MONTHby public votationMoonlit Respite by MEET THE ARTISTInterview by Images selection by This month we spotlight the universe of How did you discover Deviantart? Discovering DeviantArt was a long long time ago now. Like a lot of people who came into the "scene" at a similar time to me I was making forum signatures or tags initially and I found out about DeviantArt as a place for resources (mainly photoshop brushes, lots of grunge brushes back then and abstract renders). I didn't create an account on here until probably a year or two later when I started creating digital art at a larger scale. When did you start to create wallpapers and why? I think I initially started making wallpapers for my own use and then sharing them simultaneously because, well why not. These days it is largely the same, I tend not to make art specifically for the desktop, but the ones I think will work, I put up at a resolution that can be used (and often use them myself). Who are you? Could you describe your personality in a few keywords, please? Always a little tricky describing yourself! Despite my rolls in helping administrate various art collectives over the years, I am a pretty disorganized person who loses things all of the time. What else, I am a massive geek, am reasonably sociable (but not really a party animal) and find I tend to get on with most people... I would like to think I am a pretty good and decent person too, but I am sure everyone thinks that so I will let those who know me decide for themselves. Could you describe your artistic universe? I am a bit of a dabbler so there is fairly limited consistency in my art output! I have always favored bright colorful artwork, however, so my gallery is filled with vibrant and reasonably high contrast pieces (not so much with muted pastels). And while I have recently been trying to work on improving on a more photorealistic side my work tends to incorporate some sort of abstract element, even when it is a science fiction scene. Which software do you use? I use a fairly reasonable range of programs. While most of the work I do will involve both Cinema4D and photoshop, I also make use of a range of other programs such as Apophysis and Mandubulb3D or JSPlacement to create assets for my pieces. I am also really impressed with the updates made in Blender recently and am exploring the use of it more and more. What is your major evolution from your beginnings to now? Beyond just the general increase in skill level over the years I have been doing art I think the biggest change has probably been in the move from doing only abstract work to doing science fiction artwork. With the more abstract work you have fewer things to worry about, you can focus on composition, colors (and lighting to an extent) without worrying too much if the objects themselves make any sense, while when working on my sci-fi pieces I need to pay a lot more attention to things like scale, consistent and real lighting, are the materials and textures appropriate for what I'm trying to display. Do the objects actually look like what they are supposed to? It definitely means I have to think a little more about what I am doing and as a result, have pushed me more I think. What is your favorite topic? My favorite thing to create I think is a science-fiction-fantasy take on space. I have always been fascinated by space, its rules are so different to day to day life and there is so much out there that we just don't know yet. I have also been really into science fiction since I was young and by not going too "hard sci-fi" in my art (which is actually probably what I prefer to read and watch) it allows me to incorporate more abstract elements and bring a real sense of the unknown to the pieces. What is your favorite palette of colors to work with? I find myself going back to a blue/purple palette quite often, but really I am not sure I actually have a favorite palate. I generally like quite vibrant pieces, but even then have been known to dabble in the more muted colors. It's hard to pick something out really, I guess I like variety more than anything! What or who inspires you? Lots of things! I take quite a bit from books and film, and all of my artistic friends definitely inspire me too. Everyone who I have had the pleasure of working within art collectives over the years (The Luminarium, IN, EvokeOne, and now Project Aurora) has been awesome. Outside of them, and do go check out Project Aurora's latest release if you haven't already, Diego L. Rodríguez (www.behance.net/paranoidme) and Phil Dunne (twitter.com/lovetherobot) are both blowing me away at the moment. What do you like to share with your creations? Hopefully some vibrancy and often a little burst of energy. Ultimately I make art because I enjoy it, and I just hope others enjoy what I output and if it ignites a spark in someone else to go create things they enjoy as well that would be a great bonus! Do you have rituals, any favorite things for creating better? Which music do you listen to when you are working for example? I don't really have any rituals, I normally have some music on but what I listen to varies with what I feel like at that moment. I drink quite a bit of tea, but that goes for when I am creating or not. What are your passions? Outside of art, my interests are mainly reading and sport. I read a lot of books and football is my primary sport (both watching and playing), and lost many hours of life to both. I also dabble in other sports and try out other hobbies every now and then. I have done a couple of cycle tours, and been lucky with the weather, with friends which are always really enjoyable. What is your creative process in a few steps? My pieces tend to come together fairly organically. For my abstracts it is very much a case of try things in 3D until I get something I like, then just mess around with it in post. See what effects feel right, what color changes etc. The science-fiction work tends to have a little more structure as I will often start with a bit more of an idea of a composition I want to end up with, but even then it is very much a case of trial and error and seeing what fits. Have you got some tips for beginners? Probably nothing that people haven't said before, but a few things I would definitely recommend finding a friend or two where you all feel comfortable sharing your WIPs and getting feedback from each other to help yourself improve. Otherwise, practice is the key, don't worry that the first attempt isn't perfect, no one gets there straight away (and even after years you will still feel the same things!) and make sure that you have fun!
