Late in 1939, in this odd alternate universe, Professor Anton Veeblefitzer, world famous, and infamous, aircraft scientist and Bar Mitzvah guest singer, saw the potential of mating the German Daimler-Benz 601 liquid cooled 12 cylinder engine to the new Japanese A6M2 Zero Fighter (Top image).
PAV purchased several early production versions of the A6M2, and stripped off the Nakajima built NK1 Sakae-12 radial, air cooled engine, rated at 950 hp, and replaced them with the German DB-601 engine, rated at 1,085 hp.
PAV mounted the new engine to the A6M frame, and built a cage of ribs, to support the external skin, in order to maintain the round quality of the Zero's fuselage (Middle image).
The new machine, with it's 135 extra horsepower motor, and sleek streamlined profile, was able to easily top the original A6M2's speed of 331 mph, pulling the new design to speeds exceeding 360 mph.
Armament was still 2 x 7.7mm mg's, upper fuselage mounted, with 500 rpg. However, because of the larger wing area, the two 20mm wing mounted cannon, could now carry 120 rpg, as opposed to the original design, which allowed only 60 rpg.
General Adolf Galland, commander of German fighter forces of the Luftwaffe, upon flying a prototype of this design, in January, 1940, exclaimed: "This beats the 109 in all categories! Speed and rate of climb. Range (due to the large wing fuel cells and light weight), firepower, cockpit visibility, maneuverability"
Galland convinced German President Erwin Rommel, to cancel the Bf-109 program, and focus exclusively on mass production of the Veeblefitzer-Mitsubishi VM-6-2 "Vincent Milo" (Bottom image).
By August of 1940, the German Luftwaffe was equipped with over 275 "VM's", and these machines were able to escort German bombers to far targets, and lead them home too.
The impact of this was the downfall of the evil British-Canadian Empire Royal Air Force, and the forcing of the "Treaty Of London", which ended the Second World War in September of 1940.
And everyone went home happy!
