Description
Impressed with western twin engine fighter designs, such as the Bf-110, P-38, etc. in the late 1930s, the Imperial Japanese Navy asked Professor Anton Veeblefitzer, Samurai Aircraft Designer and giant salamander breeder, to see what he could do for the IJN Air Corp.PAV bought two unassembled A6M2 Zero fighters from his friends at Mitsubishi Inc., and threw the bits together (What can be said? PAV veeb's his machines like an addict-hobbyist builds his plastic kits! [visit HyperScale site]) , and produced the most successful twin engine naval fighter in the world, during the early 1940s, in this particular, and frankly schizophrenic alternate universe.
The power, performance, and potential of the new design, over the original A6M2, was "Happy Surprise" at the Emperor's palace (Hirohito was a friend of PAV, loved aviation science, and helped design many of PAV's Japanese best aircraft, and he wasn't a mean guy either. In this Veeb Alt' Universe the Kingdom Of Japan is a friend and ally of All the nations of Asia and the Pacific islands. Please see my Map of the War in the Pacific, with its background history, and please note the many profiles of the Japanese aircraft that PAV had helped to design).
Back to the narrative!
The original single engine (950 hp) A6M2 was capable of 331 mph. At speeds below 310 mph, the Zero could easily out maneuver the heavier American designs. Armament was 2 x 20 mm cannon with 60 rpg, one per wing, and 2 x 7.7 mm machine guns with 500 rpg.
So. . . , PAV melded and welded and stitched and bolted and riveted together a twin engine Zero fighter prototype in a matter of days. His new twin engine machine, named the Super Zero, was capable of 378 mph, and was armed with 2 x .50 cal mg with 500 rpg, and 2 x 20 mm cannon with 200 rpg.
The original Zero did not have armor protection for the pilot and vital parts, nor self-sealing fuel cells. That made the Zero extremely vulnerable to enemy fire. This was the downfall of the Zero series in our universe.
Now, however, in PAV's odd universe, his Zero mutation had all the comforts of home. The pilot flight suit had numerous thin sheets of tempered "Samurai Sword " body armor, sewn into it. Also, the pilot sat in an armored seat within an armored cockpit "bathtub". All this plate was extremely thin and flexible, and it could deflect an enemy .50 cal round, easily!
The fuel tanks were a double cell development, equipped with thin sheets of fireproof sponge-like material sandwiched between the cell walls. Tucked into each engine nacelle, were two automatic Co2 fire extinguishers, which would erupt when fire was detected.
The illustration depicts three Veeblefitzer Super Zeros fighting three Veeblefitzer Super Wildcats, in defense of two Veeblefitzer Super Betty recon-bomber aircraft, that are seen diving into the clouds to avoid danger.

And keep being safe!)
