Description
The United States Department of the Navy, excited by the success of the TBV-1A Sea-Thunder, in 1942, immediately commissioned Prof. Anton Veeblefitzer, and his team of aircraft-design engineers, to develop a single-seat'd version of the craft, that could be used as an interceptor fighter, and, attack-fighter-bomber.The result of this commission was the F1V-1A "Thundershark".
The overall dimensions, compared to the earlier designs, were reduced by 15%, and the weight was reduced by 20%.
The twin PW-R2800 motors, rated at 2,000hp were maintained
The weight reduction allowed for an increase in firepower weight.
The earlier wing positioned 4 x .50 cal mg. were abandoned, and replaced by, get ready....., 8 (EIGHT!) 20mm cannon, equipped with 175 rounds-per-gun!!!
The new design, nicknamed the "Thundershark", quickly proved itself completely superior to, not only enemy aircraft, but to all allied aircraft as well!
The "Thundershark" was immediately put into mass production, and distributed to US Navy and USMC air squadrons.
The 'craft pictured, was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Gettysburg, mid-late 1943. It was flown by CDR James D Wyrick Sr., father of the artist who has depicted this machine, for the DA viewer.
Pilots who flew the machine had this to say:
"You had to be born IN the cockpit, to fly this thing!"
(It was the first USN aircraft requiring a ladder to gain access to the cockpit).
"A measly one-half second burst of cannon-fire, and you'd toasted your opponent!"
"Strafing enemy ships was fun! They'd just blow apart, as the armor- piercing cannon rounds would ignite their ammo storage rooms!"
"It had more engine-power than it deserved! If you tried to go over 450 mph, in a dog-fight, it'd vibrate like hell!"
And so on..., and so on.... .

Thanks!
The Hellcat looked bulky as Hell, but was amazingly maneuverable.
So that's what I had in mind for my goofy design.
Problem with the aft motor, where and how do you connect the control cables, etc., from the cockpit to the tail?
Anyway, I had more fun with this design than any others.
I just finished watching the eclipse.
Here in the Seattle, Wa. area, it was about 92% totality. I had bought a pair of sun-safe viewers, and enjoyed the show.
At peak coverage, the Sun was reduced to a thick sliver above a black moon. The sky was darkened some, and it became cooler.
As the moon receded, it became warmer and warmer.
An interesting experience.
I wonder how ancient civilizations could have studied an eclipse, for the glare of the Sun, at all stages was wayyy too powerful to look directly into.
Best, Jimbo

cool. so the Thundershark is similar to the DO335 heavy fight.

Oh Yeah!
In my alt-history, Prof. Anton Veeblefitzer teams up with Howard Hughes and they design the Thundermug series, independently from the German design.

nice, how do you full about an high speed long-range delta wing fighter with a coaxial Contra-Rotating push propellers, power by a super charge Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major with ten 14.5 X114 MM HMG. it would be call supermarine Type-33A4 Skyfox

Huh?!
Whut?!
Okay!
I'll bite.
I would never "Veeblefitzer" ANY design with a coaxial counter-rotating PW...,etc. etc.
I'd contract Roswell aliens to develop a zero-point-Tesla-like energy system to tap into the quantum ether, and suck that primordial energy up, through the various scales, until it could be molded into the designs that you see on my site.
And that's the truth! Pl-pl-pl-pl! - Edith Ann

oh, okay. the Supermarine Type-33A4 Skyfox is a single set delta wing air superiority fighter. it's powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major engine with two super chargers to help the pilots milk every once of power in high altitude combat (if I'm right it well have a better power to weight ratio then the F15). the Skyfox is propelled by two quad blade petal props that are Counter-Rotating of each other in the rear of the aircraft (it's the same pusher set up you have on the A53c Thundermug). The skyfox is armed with ten 14.5X114 MM HMG's (six in the nose and two in the wing roots) with 450 rounds of High Explosive/ tracer rounds per gun and has the ability to carry 1500 pound of external munitions (like booms and/or RPG's). (the Skyfox has the same wing set up and sizes as the Saab 39 Gripen.)

No sir, the type 33A3 skyfox is a fictional aircraft much like your thundershark and thundermug. It's completely original I haven't even draw a schematic for her layout I was mainly bouncing an Idea to you.

No!
It's my neurosis, and mine alone!
Go get your own neurosis!
First, study old re-runs of "Leave It To Beaver".
Then elevate to "I Love Lucy", "Father Knows Best", and, of course, "Captain Kangaroo"!!!
Then finish it off with old editions of MAD Magazine and National Lampoon.
THENNNNN, you'll be in my neighborhood!
Happy Eclipse Day!

Well, if you won't share your crippling mental issues, then I'll just have to find my own!
But if you don't mind, I'll start with old re-runs of "Dennis the Menace" and elevate to "Blondie" movies, "Perry Mason", and, of course, "3-2-1 Contact"!!!
Then I'll finish it off with old editions of Popular Mechanics and Analog.
Because if I'm gonna design my own psychosis, it's gotta be personalized!
Happy crazy people crashing in the brief darkness day!

Jimbowyrick1 In reply to DBrentOGara [2017-08-20 05:53:12 +0000 UTC]
NO!
Going "Perry Mason" is TOO far!
"DTM" was lame!
Poor kid who played DTM was abused!!!
And I never heard of "3-2-1 Contact", so that doesn't count.
Also, the "Lone Ranger" was part of the commie conspiracy. So, don't go there.
Fred MacMurray' "My Three Sons", was totally Bolshevik!!!
Funny..., my dad read Analog, and passed them onto me.
Remember the story:"A Hawk Among the Sparrows", written by Dean McLaughlin?
One of my fave's.
Also, illustrator Frank Kelly Freas, and Wally Wood, Mort Drucker, etc., inspired my doodling desires.
Best, Jimbo

Raymond Burr is the man! And Della Street was hawt for an older lady (so was Paul Drake... but not 'for a lady'). DTM was pretty much the only show I could think of in the same age-bracket/genre as LitB.
3-2-1 Contact was a 1980s science show for kids, it was awesome! You really should check it out . This was the only really good show about science, sports, and technology in the '80s. I didn't really like The Lone Ranger... they were too mean to poor Tonto.
"My Three Sons" was kinda odd...
Analog is great, I never did real "Hawk Among the Sparrows" but it sounds awesome, I should find a copy.
I like the artists you mentioned. I'd seen Mort Drucker's work before, of course. I ahd not seen much of Wally Wood or Frank Kelly Freas. Wood draws some fine ladies, but it's Freas' space art that really catches my eye!
