I agree you with all the pieces, except for the pawns. My idea for the eight pawns could be: Spike, Apple Bloom, Scotaloo, Sweetie Belle, Swettie Drops, Lyra Heartstrings, Big Macintosh, Derpy Hooves.

I was thinking about using a DD for one of the Knights, paired with Gilda, because the Manticore really isn't "bad", esp now that they're friends with Fluttershy.

Rooks should be the dragons, Flim Flam just don't work, unless if it's the 2 of them with their locomotive as one rook piece while the other is a hostile dragon.

One of the Rook would be a dragon (the probably the Green one, who was angrier than the Red one), and the other would be the Hydra ?
Like that, and with the suggestion of 'jimbox', we would have the 2 big monsters of Season 1... though there's still the Ursa minor and Major that could be used ?

I can't believe I forgot about the hydra, sure, those are very dangerous creatures to boot!
Ok, the Ursa Major seems nice, even our own big creature choices, but let's be careful because we do not want to overkill them, some are just way too powerful. Anyway, the Ursa Minor is not ideal, too big for a pawn, cockatrice is a little too powerful as well. But it's all up to jimbox.

I like the Hyrda as a Rook, but just have the notion of scale to consider, same with dragons. I don't want anyone, or anypony or anymonster to be bigger than Discord....
