I love the d3pth of field and the colours... works for me...
but the leaves are a bit flat... can't really blend..maybe too haphazard for me..
in all... great work!

I had seperate reference for the bamboo and leaves. The characters are based upon loose reference.

The image evokes the fatalistic atmosphere of the duel. A very good work!

I've always loved your work Jim and am always on the edge of my seat waiting for you to post again. And each time I always enjoy it. I really like the life you brought to this from the samurais stance to the bamboo trees. I also really like the background, the intense sun before it sets, the yellow sky and the orange mountains brings a kind of intensive mood to it all. Great work.

Very cool Jim! It reminds me of some of the backgrounds from the Disney movie Mulan, we did some promotional work a few years ago for the movie with Aquafresh toothpaste and I got to use actual Disney artwork for the packaging. They sent us these beautiful books full of characters, backgrounds and CDs of the art, that I got to use on the packages and in house promotional posters. The background painting were spectacular! -YD
