Ditch and don is a very important skill to learn for scuba diving. It teaches two things: Firstly, the full workings of your gear so you can put it on and off, and two: to be able to remove your gear and swim to the surface if something goes wrong. They teach you this in advance scuba and the US Navy SEAL courses. Once you remove the gear, you surface, put your arms in the air, and yell "I feel fine!" so that way if you have a dive buddy they can treat you properly.
