There's a fix for that. Use actuator's on 3 blocks where you want your main house door's. Wire them up to pressure plates only players can activated very near the new doors. Now, you will be able to just run at the wall, it will open, and then shut if you have a pressure plate on both sides, and no npc will ever be able to escape or let in monsters. Word of advice, the interior areas still need doors to be counted as houses, but you can leave them open to prevent the constant opening and closing by various npc's. Plus you don't have to stop to open them yourself.

it because an update of terraria made so npc's always close the door when entering a place with a door.players found it annoying when the guide just leave the door open
