Description 'ordered what to do'...is that grammatically correct? Is it redundant?

i went a little crazy with the bruises.

also, the Joker looks way more like Heath than usual here. Maybe it's cos I finally watched the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus?

It's not really an innate ability to cope that divides the "good" abused people from the "evil" ones, though. It's that thing that makes us all human - that purely autonomous ability of personal choice that really determines how someone deals with it. I have a feeling, though, that if Joker were a real person, he would have to be TOLD he was programmed, or it would never dawn on him.

What do you think?

There seems to be a theme with the Joker of amnesia or a flexible origin story. That always felt right to me, as if he doesn't remember it, or remembers it differently every time. Whatever trauma had a part in forming him into the man he became had to be bad enough to repress. So, although I think he would easily understand the concept of behavioral programming, he wouldn't want to accept that he was a victim. Even if he intellectually realized that there was something bad in his past, he wouldn't think it was important to confront...like it wouldn't make a difference to his present situation. So, I think it would have to be 'proven' to him somehow, and that could be pretty traumatic in and of itself.

'That purely autonomous ability of personal choice' would determine how we cope with something, whether we choose to do it in a positive or negative way. If your homelife was abusive, and you couldn't ask for help for whatever reason, you could stay at the library after school, focusing on other things (like getting good grades so you can get out ASAP) or you could hang out with people you really shouldn't be, doing things that really aren't helping you but feel like a release.

You can be suffering and know you deserve better or be suffering and think everything is your fault...and a hundred permutations in between. It's that mysterious x-factor that determines the difference, and I don't presume to know what that is. But I don't think anybody is pure good or pure evil.

Agreed: your illustrations are getting more...Heath-like. :-D

Also, I'm glad he said please. It shows that he's willing to meet her in the middle...it's obvious that he wants to delve just as deep into her...

...I'm not saying she's a Mary Sue, because you've already stated she isn't.

Great work!

Ha. Delve.

I think if J is really as brilliant as a lot of Batman writers suggest, he would know that manipulating people sometimes involves humoring them. Also, they're talking about him, so naturally he's intrigued.

I'd say it's correct. Of course, being a creative writing major, I get to twist grammar around for the fun of it, but right or wrong, it sounds good.

The Joker's so defensive. You'd think that, unwilling to accept her suggestions as he is, he'd have refused to say please, but I'm glad he didn't. At least some of this is getting through to him. That, or he's just using her words to get his way

Has he stopped tearing open his cuts, then?

well if it sounds good to you, i'm satisfied.

he's stopped tearing at himself for the moment, at least.

I think he's a little confused that she'd be more concerned over his asking politely than keeping herself out of harm's way. He expects her to be afraid of him/treat him like a monster. But yeah, maybe he's just refraining from breaking her fingers to lull her into a false sense of security.

I have to read your writing...

I'm flattered that you'd want to! I write a lot of Batman fanfiction, should you ever be so inclined: [link] "The Horrible Sickness" is probably my favorite one shot that I've done, with the added benefit of it not being a trillion chapters long.

So are the meds evening him out, or did he give up the wound-picking on his own?

hey, thank you, i'll sign up on ff so i can review.

I guess I'm thinking he self-mutilates when he's feeling particularly stressed (like being locked in a room with no means of escape). Even just the presence of another person would probably mitigate that a little. I think the meds would take down the worst of the mania...I knew someone who was bipolar with psychotic features, and lithium stopped her from cutting. The next time he's feeling 'out of control' (he might say he's not a control freak, but honestly, he's pathological about getting his way), without someone else to rail against, he'll do it again. SO, to end this rambling...i think my answer is yes, and yes, mostly.
