Description Check it out, it's like that panel I drew already...except now it's a silhouette!!! Ahh, a hallmark of a lazy artist.

What's so bad about nail-biting?

Heehee 'terrible habit of biting my nails'. He rocks. So much.

I like her little bonsai tree.

Makeup as an "offense mechanism," heh. That was great, as was the terrible habit of biting his nails.

Thanks! The idea of the makeup as 'war paint' sort of inspired that line.

The piece I'm working on now has me wishing I had your skills at hand-drawing. Fingers on a guitar? Fail. They look like worms.

Jimothy-Bobert In reply to citizen17 [2010-03-15 18:56:40 +0000 UTC]

Dang, the 'guitar-hand' is a tricky one, because it's all arched and staggered and such. Wooo, I been there. Well, if it helps, I regularly make people pose for me so I can draw from life. It was pretty funny to see my dad holding a book while watching TV! If there's nobody around, you can draw from your own hand in the mirror. If all else fails, I think it's OK to look at a photo, especially if you took it. I really don't understand this idea that 'reference' = 'cheating'. Since when is looking around at the world for factual data something to be shunned?

citizen17 In reply to Jimothy-Bobert [2010-03-15 23:21:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, hands have this thing about them. I just can't get my pencil to trace the lines I want it too when it comes to fingers.
Haha! That's a cool reference for the book! And I don't think it's cheating either, to use a photo as reference. Heck, even with a reference I manage to fail - or sometimes win - so it's still the artist's own work. What next? Copyrights on family members? Don't think so.

Sometimes if I try drawing someone from a photo, there's less resemblance than if I just draw them from memory. Go figure.

They do have, those, like wooden poseable hands at nice arts n crafts stores...I always wanted one of those.

citizen17 In reply to Jimothy-Bobert [2010-03-17 02:17:17 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that's a feat.

Oh yeah, that hand thing. I'd love to have one too. Though I have a mannequin and I NEVER used it for reference.

Jimothy-Bobert In reply to citizen17 [2010-03-17 04:17:10 +0000 UTC]

Oh, gosh, I didn't mean it to sound like I was bragging. I just mean sometimes the mental impression of a person's face yields more of a likeness because memory exaggerates the recognizable features...what's unique about a certain person. Plus, I tend to get bogged down in the details when I look at a photo, like the shading and such, instead of focusing on the geometry.

Yeah, sometimes I think those mannequins are just to look 'artsy'. The head of the one I've got is WAY out of proportion.

citizen17 In reply to Jimothy-Bobert [2010-03-17 17:55:13 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, that's an interesting point of view, about the memory that exaggerates facial features. I wonder if caricature artists feel that too.

And you didn't sound like you were bragging at all. I was a tad too enthusiastic, that's all.

And yeah, my mannequin's head is also HUGE. D:

"I have this terrible habit... of biting my nails." I seriously have tears of laughter in my eyes now. That was brilliant. And I just love it when writers/comic artists have Joker using his face paint as an "enhancement" of his "personal beauty" - you know, like he's making a statement or something. Deidre is pretty. And that's an interesting name. The conversation in this one was amusing. If Jonny wasn't a patient as well, they should have had him be Joker's doctor... Now that would be interesting.

Jimothy-Bobert In reply to WitchyWanda [2010-03-12 21:34:59 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, most 'normal people' probably wouldn't get it. To me, it's complicated. I mean, we all make choices about how to present ourselves to the world. Most people wear their 'freakishness' on the inside, or behind closed doors, etc. But some looks are calculated to shock. And some shocking looks are accurate to what someone is like inside. Yet, I don't know if we can ever appear as what we truly are, because we are constantly 'being'...we're verbs, not nouns.
