They grew up in worlds of exile where everyone who ever should have loved them spit in their faces instead. But they did grow up. They hated their lives too much to ever give in to something as soothing as death. They would rather continue to dwell in their dark passions.

And they grew up with this hatred boiling inside them. The dark haired boy became tall, lean. His features turned sharp and his lips slowly formed a permanent scowl as his smiles appeared less and less. It was only when he gave up trying to fit in with his fellow species that they suddenly wanted him for themselves. The women would stare as this living shadow brushed past delicately as if it didn’t even exist. Dark, forbidding, mysterious; everything a rebellious girl would want. But it was far too late- the boy was already done with this world.

One last push from a family that barely remembered his name except when they were screaming at him was all it took to drive him directly into the arms of his enemy. But he was too late too.

His alien had grown up with a little more fire to him- but now... now he was done with his own world as well. His leaders, how pathetic could they be? They had taken their one most loyal servant and given him a death wish. Their last request was that the young soldier should self-destruct so as to never cause them another annoyance again. But the alien was strong too. His resistance was his last stand.

Together, they had nowhere to run. So they sat back and watched and waited for the world to burn with the hatred it had shown them. They watched it thrive in self-pity alone. Together.

    And they grew up.

    And their dreams came true.

The prideful one DID take over the world; slowly at first. But with every election, he gained more power. His stripped tongue spat out words that made his audience nod in eager agreement and do his bidding without a single question asked. They were words of hope and love and peace and care. Words that went against his very nature of thought- but oh how the humans loved it. They wanted to make him their leader. And the only one who could’ve ever stopped him stood by his side in the shadows.

That one, the ghost of a young man, he got what he wanted as well. He toured the world and forced anyone who would listen to open their eyes to the hidden places around them. But he gave up on the supernatural. The real bad guys didn’t hide in the forests or in space. They walked the same streets as everyone else. They were family, neighbors, lovers. They were everything that was wrong with his once beloved planet. And he made sure they disappeared.

When they weren’t fighting monsters or making new ones, they returned home to loathe their lives alone. Together.

So, it was bound to happen sooner or later. Humans have needs, and so do Irkens. But they would never admit that it only took one beer, shared between the two, to force them into each other’s bodies late at night. They were relieved enough that at least beer was involved so they could blame it on something besides themselves.

Except it kept happening. Over and over until it was a daily occurrence.

They were never soft; no. Not at all. They didn’t make love.

They ravaged each other’s bodies and spirits with all the impassioned hatred that had ever burned inside them. They took out their pain and their anger against two worlds. A world stupid enough to banish their savior and lift their ultimate destruction onto a pedestal made of their own blood and souls. A world cold enough to laugh at the heartbreak of their most loyal member and only offer the advice “go kill yourself.” They were two worlds that mashed into one giant ball of suffering that drove their two biggest mistakes insane, until they only grew rougher with each other to drown out their partner’s misery with something a little less despicable.

    They hated everything together.

    So they became lovers.

Lovers who would never say those three words, but would instead fill a handshake with blood and swear the endings of their own lives to none other than their partner’s doing. Who else was worthy enough to end their long sufferings?

But not yet. They hated their lives too much to ever give in to something as soothing as death. Not until they taught their worlds what death really meant.
