Yeah, it seems like some people at Nintendo think the "always the same" thing is appealing to people who want Mario to resemble the old-school games... problem is, having the overall look of things change from one game to the next would make the Mario series *MORE* like the classic Mario games that everyone remembers, and keeping it all the same is the opposite of that!Β Back in the day it seemed Nintendo was one of the only game companies that DID change the look of their main "mascot" characters and their worlds from one game to the next (compare Mario 1-3 and his Game Boy spinoffs to Sonic 1-3 and his Game Gear spinoffs for an example... Sonic and his levels are near identical in appearance from one game to the next, while Mario's a little different in each game but still recognizable as Mario) and now somehow they've flipped around to doing the same thing everyone else does and making more games that look the same -- at least with Mario.Β The new "3D Mario is always the same" thing definitely isn't helping.
(Bringing in new bad guys every few games rather than just the endless cycle of Bowser, Bowser, Bowser and his kids, Bowser and his weird identical clone-kid, more Bowser, etc... would also be nice.Β They did it fairly often back then -- there was no Bowser in either of the Game Boy Mario Land games, or SMB2.)
