It is as easy as opening a book on art history and taking a good look at the buildings. After a while you'll notice the common features of medieval Romanesque (that is how it is officially called, to distinguish it from Julius-Caesar-Roman) architecture. Games like Age of Empires 2 helped me a lot too. Then it's only a matter of imagination and voila
There is one building in particular I'd like you to take a look at: the Maria Laach Abbey. IMO it is one of the finest Romanesque examples.

It would be pretty cool to triple the size of the actual observatory structure, then give it some overly-complex external gear mechanism to articulate. random comment...
