So this is your process, huh? I have done this technique with oil paints before, but have never attempted it in a digital medium ... Now I will have to try

Really? woah!
Do you have your own custom brushes, or do you use default ones?

Is this what they call photo bashing. Im curious one and two suck at this style. Ive tried and failed hard. I gotta say you do this well. Love it.

Most industry artists now "photo-bash" it's accepted in the non-illustrative sense to help speed.

they could...use this in say....early concept art for just selling the idea in which they are trying to convey right? I mean just from sitting back at the early stage in the piece one realizes that there is a ton of color and shapes in minutes as compared to a more thought out approach, Β meaning one could produce a quite a few of these a day and I mean in the pro world 2-4 would be killing it I assume. Is this allowable for most employers or clients. you say accepted. Surely if a client accepted one of these from me and decided to run with it or use it they would ask me to take it further into a more well more industry standard type or refined painter style or have you known these to pass along the round table at work and considered viable. tools at the ready are never bad to have handy. You have my serious interest with this. its just bees-knees cool this style is. to turn a great picture out of chaos. too cool man, too cool.

I mean as in every concept artist that i know in the industry does this. Its widely accepted and not frowned upon, as long as youre not art-bashing (Overlaying other artwork from other artists) then its fine. The only time its not overly used is in illustration for final products. Anything not seen by the public which is used for internal use can be made in anyway that isnt stealing other art. Artists are paid to design and produce ideas, not to render things to make them look pretty. Photo's allow fast rendering for artists to bang out 2-6 paintings a day in early production.Β

Great work. So how many different photos and photo textures did you sample when making this piece?

jjpeabody In reply to Eliminate [2014-06-30 09:31:21 +0000 UTC]
As many as I needed
Seriously, I'mΒ not sure.Β It wasn't many.Β MaybeΒ 4 or 5.Β Cliffs in the background, rocks on the foreground, and I used photos bothΒ color and helping build upon the base.

Huh. I love your art process, it starts out so blurry but turns out so well! Working on certain bits and pieces first is great because your attention to detail is impeccable! It just takes a while because details. <3

How the f..? How can you envision what the places in the starting photo are suppose to become? I know, it's step-by-step, but still... I wouldn't be able to envision anything and then start to create it someting more... Damn, you're talented.

So the process looks like I know what the end result will be, but in truth it evolves to that. The first tile shows the basic composition. It's that tile that sets the stage. Everything after that is dropping in color, value, etc. often times things change after I start. Nothing is set: I don't know the end result. Β It's even a surprise to me.

It's amazing how you do it! I never would be able to. I'm good in writing, but getting me to do art stuff might end up in a disaster. I'm not that bad at pencil or sticking bits together with glue (aka modelling, or scrap art), but computer art is something totally alien to me!
It's amazing how you can end up with such an increadible finish, when the beggining was looking so...unnatractive...
