Description
Okay. PLEASE ALLOW ME TO EXPLAIN! The seal child in this picture is in fact my own oc Helen Brigs, this is just an AU version of her. In this she lives in a place called Cosium, this zone and the ruffed-up looking oc next to her (Benonic the Hedgehog) both belong to this fabulous artist. Piece of advice if you have a DA account I really suggest you go watch her. Seriously, this amazing woman is what I aspire to be! (In terms of creating great art and story lines.) Anyway below the line is a one shot story explaining this interaction, as a role player I’ll keep it completely restrained to Helen’s perspective, so... here you go.
Ah, the effects that rain brought, were truly a wonder.
Well at least in Helen’s perspective, anyway. Truth be told, anything that involved Mother nature’s use of water tended to grab the seal’s heart and wrap it up in pure wonder. Perhaps, this unusual fascination came from her being an aquatic mammal? Or maybe it was because this particular child had the ability to lift up liquids and form them into whatever she desired. Making them ice or vapor, molding, shaping, them, like an artist at work. Indeed, although the anthropomorphic animal could not show her gift in public (out of fear of being accused as evil) she always made sure to preform it with beauty and grace when there was a spare moment of isolation. But now was not the time for such things. No, today she was going to do something far more important, something that she wanted to do for a long time.
The girl’s bare flippers were flapping in a quick pace across the muddy ground. It had rained recently, and (even though the new spring grass prevented some dampened dirt from sticking on her feet) Helen knew perfectly well that a good scolding by the orphanage’s owner concerning her tidiness was inevitable. But she didn’t care, in fact the little seal truly enjoyed feeling the earth squished between her toes. However that small pleasure soon came to an end when she suddenly stopped about ten feet away from a stone bench, perched near-by the dusty path. For on there was the individual she was looking for.
Although she could not see, the seven-year-old could very much identify his scent, and thanks to her unusual powers involving liquids, could sense the blood pumping in him as well. Just as she could with all living creatures. This trait was only known by her brother, and herself, as revealing it to another would sound a tad frightening coming off lips. The thing that made Benonic easy to feel though this was the strange blood flow in his right hand, as it seemed to constantly change, never sticking on a certain beat for too long. Her older sibling, Wind Brigs had described the pale purple hedgehog’s appearance in much detail. Claiming that his eyes were like that of an empty grave and he was practically adorned in scars from head to toe. But the most mysterious feature about him was the mask that completely covered his muzzle, leaving people to wonder ‘what exactly was under that steel coating?’ By the way her brother talked, the aquatic mammal couldn’t help but be quite surprised once ears had heard he was the adopted son of Queen Athena, former ruler of Cosium.
However, in all honesty Helen did not really care for Benonic’s appearance. Why would she? After all ever since the day she lost her sight, the anthropomorphic seal vowed to never judge someone by their looks again. His physical traits weren’t even what cause her to be so open to him in the first place. No, rather it was the silent language he knew that enticed the little girl’s interest.
The orphanage’s owner had forbidden any children to talk with Mr. Benonic, stating that ‘he was an adult and prince with huge responsibilities, and that he need not for children to bother him’. But Helen (with her longing to know of that silent language too great) defied the owner’s wishes, and secretly went to greet him everyday for the past few months, during the time he went out on a routinely ‘patrol’ of some sorts. With each encounter the seal wanted to ask him an important question, but had been too cowardly to do so. Each time resulting in a mere, simple hello and an awkward silence as she sat near his form, and fiddled away with what ever her hands could find, until one of them left.
This problem was (surprisingly) not in anyway caused by his appearance, but rather out of the fear that he would ‘say’ no. Sign language usually did require working optics after all. However with determination, and courage coursing through her veins, Helen Brigs refused to allow this to be another day of no progress. So, taking a deep breath she finally went up to the mysterious entity, with a smile.
“Hi, Mr. Benonic.” she said warmly, like always. After this The little seal proceeded to climb up on the stone resting spot and sit next to him. Then closed her lifeless eyes and sniffed the air. “I always like spring rain. It leaves a nice smell. Plus the mud is really squishy, and fun to feel.” A pause pierced the air as Helen’s head now moved down in uncertainty. Time to be a little brave.
“Mr. Benonic...” she began in a shy tone. “I’ve heard you know how to talk through sign language, and well, I was wondering... could you teach me how to do it?” The last set of words came out quick and crisp, as she wanted to get the impending rejection over with. “Pl-please Mr. Benonic? I know that I can’t see the symbols, and I’m not the best person to teach, but I can feel them, and remember their shapes. Plus I really want to learn it. I want to talk to those who can’t. Because... because I don’t want them to feel like they’re useless!” A gloved hand quickly covered her mouth. As she had realized what words were just released. In that babbling of a speech the little girl had unintentionally revealed an insecurity of her own heart. After another pause her palm moved down and a sad smile formed. “Sorry, I was talking too much, wasn’t I?” Hand, concealed in white fabric then extended in front of her form.

Eeep. Thank you, and yeah, hopefully I can get out of my role plays on tumblr and draw her more. Plus I need to do some studies on how blind and mute people interact with one another without technology, so I can better understand how to proceed with this. 030

Awesome! Looking forward to it!
As for me, I really need to get back to my own Cosium stories. I'm pretty behind now.

Lovely concept. When I took ASL in college, one of the things most of my classmates did was go translate for deaf and blind people (and I'm assuming this character is based on the famous Helen Keller even though yours is not deaf). It's really not that difficult for Benonic to teach her, since all she has to do is ask for a word and he can show her. The harder part is if he wants to teach Helen something and can't tell her what it means.

(Heck yeah I based her on Helen Keller! I can't help but admire people like her. >w<) Yeah that's one way to get them to communicate. I think there's also a possibility of them communicating through writing. Like maybe Benonic can write his point in the dirt and guide Helen's finger to trace the letters. She does at least know their shapes after all. Either that or he can bring one of his friends to communicate for him. I'll try to study a bit more on the subject when I can.

Technically once she learns to sign the alphabet they shouldn't have much trouble at all. Feeling letters is difficult, but signing them is easy. It's worth looking up some videos on communicating with deaf/blind people to see how they do it.

This is cool! Although I'm not sure how to teach one who is blind and Ben doesn't speak to explain at all That is a story I would like to see how it goes

Oh well I suppose I could make another one sometime in the future. To be honest I actually based Helen off of this one famous author who was both blind and death, but with the help of a very professional teacher managed to communicate with other people. As for Ben's situation Helen does remember the shapes of letters, so perhaps he could guide her fingers to form them and slightly communicate. Either that or he can convince Carrie or Athena to help him out. >v>
