Description
I got one!I had originally despaired that my attempts to photograph the new comet were in vain. On the morning of September 12th, I dutifully reported in for Dawn Patrol, found a reasonable location facing the NE that didn't have too many city lights (and ironically just under the photo is a major interstate highway, busy even at 0530) and started hunting.
I found the crescent moon and Venus easily enough - very pretty too. And per my star tracker, the comet was in the constellation Leo's hindquarters. In theory it would be up with about 20 minutes to spare. But no luck. It wasn't visible to the naked eye. And my camera didn't initially appear good enough to pick it up, even with a time exposure. Sometimes you just don't have the right equipment for the job.
But then today, as I was getting ready to clear the card, I saw it. I never realized that its tail had gotten so long. And while the predawn glow may have washed out the green in my photos, there it was.
Sometimes, you just get lucky.
