I understand their disappointment
When we went camping, we had 2 small dog "Névé" a love of Pekingese and "Plume" her best friend, a small York
We had to tie them but they still remained close to us because we were never far away, and then outputs: Beach, town, country,... we brought them still. They were not unhappy
