Description A tutorial going over some of the concepts I try to follow when doing species and character design. It's pretty general suggestions so that it can be applied towards different types of characters.

I hope you enjoy!

Edit: Holy crap. A DD! Thank you SO much to =Sarky-Sparky for the suggestion and to `FantasyStock for the feature.

Of all the pieces in my gallery, I'm really thrilled that it was this one. I love creating characters, and I hope that people find this useful in making their own!

I use to say this: there are great artists, and there are great artists who don't hesitate to share their knowledge or secrets, those ones are the so called masters, maestros or senseis.

Thanks for sharing this.

I LOVE this JNet, your characters are so pretty! I love the lizard look too, I honestly want to make a character of this race now haha. Your line art is clean and your colors are crisp, by the way I love that girl with the landscape coming off of her clothes, cool idea! I also like that your words are clear and easy to understand and that they are legible (yay typing!) It's neat and very well put together, easy to understand. The clothing is AWESOME too, I like the little blue dots on the female too. Overall, amazing job and great detail, I can tell that you put a lot of hours into this and you definitely deserve the DD! This really does help a lot! Keep at it!

You bring up a lot of good points, and to some of it all I can say is "Be merciful!" Other parts, I have the information, but didn't think it was necessary to include in the tutorial.

This species was designed as part of a world I use for my Video Game Art & Design projects. That said, in games, it's not really about being 100% true to science. I wanted to create a reptilian species, that drew from reality, but fit into the world and game I was designing.

Some things, like the breasts, isn't really explained in the tutorial. The females don't have breasts, but they have a ridge formed by their rib cage which sits much higher than a human and helps give them an illusion of femininty. Similarly with the fur, which helps tie in the species having hair, which is part of making them more relateable for players.

Even though it may not be scientifically plausible to have the race with an opposable thumb, it's required for the video game environment in order for them to interact with the environment.

The eyes and coloring, I can agree with you on. I dont' know too much about different eye types and I will go and do some research and possibly update my race! And I appreciate all the feedback.

In video games, a lot of the design is about making the species relateable to players because people are more comfortable taking on the role of something that follows similar to human patterns. A great example is the female charr which will be appearing in Guild Wars 2. Game designer Kristen Perry talks about the difficulties of translating the female feline humanoid into a form that both fits the idea of the race and still has an attraction appeal. ([link] ).

Well, all I can say to that, is to each their own. I'm still a student at Art Institute, so I'm not claiming to be a master or even a working professional designer, but it's just kind of how video games work. There are always people who prefer realism in armor and will complain about the metal bikini plate mail sets, but there are also the people who enjoy the look, even if it isn't realistic.

If it's not your thing, that's fine! But I don't think you need to be so aggressive, especially since I'm not trying to say you're wrong.

Dude, it's an ORIGINAL CHARACTER creation tutorial, just because in real life lizards may have different skin pigments for survival reasons doesn't mean that people need to create their characters "realistically" - When making a character, you could have pink skin, blue eyes and green stripes for all anyone cares, you could have tentacles for hair, the whole point is to be original, not statistical. lol, if you want to make your characters that realistic, go ahead, but most people make fantasy characters for the fact of that, fantasy. I see what you're trying to say, but I think that you went a bit overboard.

Honestly I think that JNet did an amazing job with this tutorial, and I think that many people will find this helpful. I know I did, thanks Jnet!
