I agree. if you dont have anything nice to say, you probably shouldnt say it. I mean sure constructive criticism. fine. but you dont go to others arts and say that it should've never been created!

thats like saying that a child should've never been born!

i wouldnt go that far as to make a connection between a child and a photograph but yes, it doesnt bring anything to anyone...

Haha, this is pretty awesome actually I think that it does seem to have some sort of movement to it and it's clever. It's not your average photograph and that's what causes controversy. Good job and congrats on the DD!!!

Hmmm the idea for this photo was to create an emphasis on a small, not centered object, yes?
Great work.
Although, I wish the ceiling didn't show, since it distracts the eyes a little bit.

I'm a bit confused. Was this awarded for the artist to get more credit, or am I missing something here? I'm not trying to be a jerk or infer that it's underserving anything, I'm just a bit curious since the reason given confused me a smidgen.

I'll be happy to explain it to you as I was the one who suggested ~jnnifr in general, although ^Gonzale was already familiar with her work - so this is strictly from my point of view and understanding.

I find her photographs very intriguing as there is something so intrinsically hypnotic about the 'emptiness' in these pieces. I suppose the problem we have with this website is that most people are used to photographs being 'full' of something, that it has to be saturated with objects or that the concept/idea just has to very obvious. I find her works to be very subtle - it has no frills, nothing is in the frame that doesn't need to be although you might argue there is not enough is in the frame. I like looking at her work, because my life is so cluttered, I want to look at art that is clean, ironically, maybe art that is empty or lacking, it helps me escape. I want to live through her 'ghost' life in these photographs.

You might find that curlers is aesthetically bland, but I find it quite the opposite. You might find it has a snapshot aesthetic, but like most photographers who work in that style, surprisingly, nothing is left unconsidered in the frame. Instead of seeing a badly composed photograph, I find myself asking, in a good way, why she chose something so unusual, why did she not go for the obvious?

I don't just look at the one work 'curlers' when assessing ~jnnifr , I see her whole portfolio as this astounding body of work that is quite mature for her age. She is only 15, and on deviantART, yet she isn't attempting to please the masses - no gothic self-portraits or badly manipulated eyeballs. She photographs the world in a very curious and obscure way, with the muted colours and cropped compositions - at 15 (or at any age) it's very refreshing to see this, and even more astounding that so young she has already developed such a distinctive style.

A few other deviants have eloquently stated their reason for liking this work - =mumbojumbo89 for example says the work makes her feel free while ~awwhoneybear so beautifully stated that her portfolio was 'like looking at a life but you never see the whole thing'. I suppose the description of the selection was minimalist in itself, I don't think it was necessary to say more for the description, but now you have an expansion! I can understand why you might be left confused as it is a very difficult piece to interpret for some. I hope that sheds a bit of light?

You are more than welcome! I don't necessarily expect you to have magically fallen in love with the work based on what I wrote, you are of course always entitled to dislike an artwork, but I hope you now understand why there are those who feel so positively about this one in particular and why ~jnnifr was compelling enough to be shared with the whole community.

For God's sake, people...just grow up. If you have anything against this getting chosen as a DD, you shouldn't comment /HERE/! This way, you'll be just stealing the artist's happiness and that's not cool. Not cool at all.

If you don't like the fact that this photograph got a DD, it's not the artist's fault. So please just grow up and stop commenting HERE about this. Take it to the higher-up places of the website...commenting here like this, saying it's not deserving or there are better Deviations around, you're not proving your point or anything, you're just erasing this person's happiness.

Also, consider taking a look at FAQ #873: What do I do when I disapprove of a Daily Deviation feature?

Leave her alone, just because she got a DD doesn't mean the worlds going to end, it shouldn't hurt you so that she got it.

This is a freaking Art Site, not a famous gallery.

I love photography. It may not exactly be part of my area of expertise being an illustrator, but even so I can identify when a photographer proposes something fresh and new. I like your vision, with your shots you make everyday things interesting, you find the artistic side of the world and that for me is something enviable. Congrats on the DD, well deserved.

iamthewizard2 [2009-06-29 16:25:05 +0000 UTC]

I thought i left my last message here a little short...so i decided to expand on it and explain why i disagree with this being DD. I didnt mean to disrespect the photographer and when i say 'i disagree with this being DD' that is NOT THE SAME as saying 'the photographer is not talented.' Looking at jnnifr's gallery i believe she is a very talented photographer but this piece that was chosen as a DD is CLEARLY not one of her best works. Just look at [link] and compare that to this DD. You can see that in the umbrella piece there is movement suggested and almost a symmetry of light ...but yet here in this piece there depicts no symmetry, no movement, no impact of shadows or lighting...in fact the picture looks highly grainy in the upper left; the ceiling outline is not even lined up horizontal and it seems slightly out of focus. The 'curler' subject seems over-cropped to make out or suggest anything significant. Surely if you knew anything about art critique at all you would know this is clearly not the best piece in her gallery at all. Her umbrella piece is brilliant ..so i dont understand why this was chosen as DD ...you can see clearly from a lot of the responses below that many were confused why this was DD. Yes art may not be about majority opinions, but one clearly needs to define WHY a piece deserved a DD and not just because Gonzale thought that this was 'minimilasim in all it's beauty' - that statement is far too generalised.
