Description
...WOW. I have been gone for almost 2 months. That is really, really sad. I'm sorry if it seems like I've been ignoring everybody; I haven't - college has kept me quite busy lately. My entry for 's Zelda dungeon design contest. Other than its questionable shape (seriously, what idiot thought it would be a good idea to shape a dungeon like a backwards swastika?) this is one of my favorite dungeons. I love the color scheme, the enemies, and Manhandla is one of my favorite Zelda bosses. Since this is an old dungeon, I thought it would give me a good amount of room to be creative. I wanted to show the shape of the final hallway, but I wanted it to be longer, so I kind of cheated by adding an extra room. Since the dungeon seems a lot like a huge temple, but then the boss is a plant, I wanted the final stretch of the dungeon to be crumbled and overrun with life. I took a lot of inspiration from the Skyview Temple in Skyward Sword for plants (BTW that game is epic and you all should play it). If you look close, you can see Manhandla in the background. I made the entrance to his room look like the entrance to the dungeon as well.
My whole goal with this was to update the temple but make it instantly recognizable to hardcore Zelda fans. I think I failed miserably, but I hope you all like it anyway.

that would be awesome! two of my favorite LoZ games with a TP makeover (that includes the controls, I'd be upset if they ruined em with SS controls) would make me a happy girl!

Yeah, SS' controls weren't that great.

Wow... I love this. I always did associate this dungeon with plant life and an old temple ((cause of the Darknuts). You did an amazing job with this classic dungeon.

Wow, thank you! I've always wondered what the rest of the old dungeons would look like if they were updated.

They should do a 3D, Twilight Princess-style remake of the original game.

That'd be tough. You have to take into account the location, enemies, and the dungeon layout. Like the Eagle dungeon. I see that as an old crypt due to all the Stalfos. Amazing work , btw.

Hmmm...I actually don't really see the Eagle dungeon as a crypt. I always saw it as more of a forest dungeon...not an old and overgrown temple like this one, but an actual forest/plant based dungeon. Mostly because the dungeon is inside a tree. Actually, if you think about it, it's a lot like the Forest Temple from Ocarina of Time: forest location, you get the Bow there, occasional water areas, Stalfos and Wallmasters...
Sorry, I kind of went off on a tangent there. And thank you!

The Manji or Swastika is actually a really old religious and spiritual symbol. [link]
The Nazis perverted it, but it's a legitimate symbol with a legitimate meaning. I don't think it's bad this dungeon uses it, although it does invite misunderstanding. Regardless, this game wasn't made to be marketed in the US. This was a Japanese game. I don't think people should let the symbol just become "that Nazi symbol". The symbol even appears in Naruto and Bleach.
Anyway, this is a great scene. I think you captured the dungeon pretty well, and the plant theme and overgrowth is sorta how I imagined it myself.

Ya, no problem. I didn't know about this for a while myself, and I don't really know if it's common knowledge or not. And yeah, thanks for the cool art. :3

Thanks a lot! I've always wanted to go through updated versions of old dungeons. Nintendo should do that sometime.
