Description
Ri-hua at age 12 and Zhao at 17 ( shorter sideburns XD)I'll fix the grammar later... i'm really bad in chinese:
should translate like this:
" Today, i went to the fourth main gate to observe godfather's (Jeong Jeong) students. A man asked me about my blue flame. He said his surname was Zhao." - Wei Ri-hua
sorry for the big watermark... can't resist putting my name on it... don't know if grammar is correct
>excerpt from Hui-xing's (great x 3 grandfather of Ri-hua) dream/premonition journal, and was later written by rihua herself ... only with more details written and no pic.
>Since she is a fire guardian, one of her duties were to observe all the people coming in and out of the 4th gate, subdue any violator, and keep any invaders at bay.
story of pic
- She spends most of her time there with Jeong Jeong. He asked her to spar with one of his students to show them that they lack skill and agility. She didn't use fire bending at the beginning, but was forced to use her blue flame when it was getting out of hand. The guy(not Zhao) she sparred with has a bad temper.
- Zhao, being power hungry, asked her on how she attained so much power, complementing her at the same time.(she blushes) She just said "I trained hard.", feeling a bit awkward because Zhao was staring at her.
He asked her how she trained."The same as what Uncle Jeong Jeong's throws at you... You should train harder and be obedient to Uncle Jeong Jeong." *Oh, hell. how he hated her for that comment >: (
* Seeing him get angry, she tries to cool him down with, "I believe you can get more powerful than Uncle Jeong Jeong. You have so much stamina. You can go far ahead if you trained hard."( smile and kiss Zhao's forhead... blush even more) 'Why did I do that? Nooo!'
Zhao: Just Jeong Jeong... ;: (
Ri-hua: X( Ah... I don't know how powerful you'll get won't I? I did not say ' as powerful', I said 'More powerful'.
Jeong Jeong comes and orders Zhao to go back in line and stop intimidating Ri-hua.
Jeong: why did you kiss him.
Ri-hua: I don't know... maybe he was like father.
Jeong: How is he related to Cu-quang?
Ri-hua: Well, he gets angry easily. They have the same frowns. That might be why I kissed his forehead, like i do with father when he gets angry.
Jeong: You are lucky he isn't here with us. huh
Ri-hua follows Zhao with her eyes
Jeong:You like him don't you ? >: (
Ri-hua: No. *looks and pouts at jeong* I don't like disobedient men.
Jeong: I despise my students. *looks at ri-hua, who is frowning at him* Except you. I had no problems with training you... take away the times you burn up with fever after eating crustaceans or mollusk, and vomit when having eaten some meat.
Ri-hua: Thanks for being patient with me.
Ri-hua writes her "nah"( a long downward stoke made going from left to right) in an odd way Ex: the second char on the far left column
Hui-xing writes in Ri-hua's hand writing
EDIT_______________
changed some characters for translation... thanks
put in semi-seal script of Hui-xing (chinese characters of comet) in red, wrote Wei Ri-hua bigger

This picture holds a whole new meaning for me now... I remember commenting on it ages ago and thinking that the characters were so beautiful and wishing that I could read them, and now that I've been studying Chinese for four months, I can read some of them! :3 I'm not very good at reading traditional, but I understand what most of the first sentence says without looking at your translation. It's kind of cool.
Still such a beautiful picture. :3

I didn't realize that it has been three years already. Reading the backstory now, I think I made Ri-hua a bit too innocent for her age. -shot- But then again, children from that era usually are.
XD Chinese calligraphy is wonderful. I'm still partial to traditional because of the beauty of it (can't understand shortcut and pinyin.) I'm glad you are enjoying your new ability. Studying Chinese really was hard on us since all we did is memorize. Use it often in conversation so you won't forget.
I'll go at it again after two years. I don't have the time nowadays to restudy Chinese. I'm glad you still enjoy the picture after all those years--back when I don't even have pressure on my tablet. -dies-

Ahhh, yeah, I get that. Inspiration and stuff. I get mine from art, from stories, from just random thoughts popping into my head. ; Kinda weird, I know, but it works for me.

XD Things work differently for different people. I draw what pops out of my head that I think is draw worthy.

I love the backstory and the art style.
Though I must admit... the major reason I like this is because of the way you drew Zhao. He looks really handsome!

Sorry, i meant write. The Character is different than you would write it traditionally. Maybe I don't know. I think the creators are using the traditional surname Zhao. Ehhh I'm sorry I was so rude sounding in my last post. It sounded better in my head.
Maybe this Zhao? "θΆ"

Joan-Kagami In reply to YUETPING [2007-11-02 14:14:18 +0000 UTC]
;:] why would you "spell" 'zhao'? ... 'Zhao' is the phonetic symbol for that certain chinese word> the pinyin is shown in the chi-eng dictionaries...
if you meant "write" the chinese word 'Zhao'
>the creators didn't say which chinese character 'zhao' they are using... they didn't put more detail into that char, thus i may use whatever zhao i like (just used the actual surname one)
> or (if the char is correct) you might think it is wrong because you're using the shortcut version (like any young modern chinese users... mostly from China or any other place aside form taiwan, philippines and some other places)... i'm using the traditional version

Very well balanced and pleasing to the eye... I don't know enough Chinese to ask for a tissue even, but have spent some time familiarizing myself with it, so recognize several characters. It's nice to have a story to go with it that I can understand, too... Thanks for sharing it.

i'm not that good in chinese too... must be the hatred of learning it since kinder to highschool under objective/"if you have good memory, you pass" curriculum... it's quite embarassing

Nice calligraphy. Your grammar isn't so bad. I know some Chinese, but not enough to go around with in China. It's cleverly put there. Nice idea and colors also.

Really like the brushstrokes on this one, plus the poses. Nice and loose.
Haha, Zhao is already impressed (or jealous) by a girl 5 years younger and more talented than him. Guess he will have to train harder

yesh, i can't just have him falling in love with a little girl so easily... it developes overtime
got the idea of (rocky) training grounds in one of your pages XD ... actually made a whole country out of your ideas. haha... even designed the people behind the earthquake thing... and so forth
In zuko alone... why did Iroh hold and write with the brush the wrong way... as if he was not chinese and the thing he is using is a pencil? ...
...aang and friends are weirdly proportioned... aang is of a 5 yr olds and toph is of 4... cartoons are wierd
