these two characters are perfect reflections of each other.
Similarites:
they are both descendants of hohenhiem. they both use alchemy and it is a defining physiological model for them. they both crave knowledge.
now onto the differences and how they overlap
Differnce:
Ed by is human obviously but its more so in the fact that he willing to look past serotypes and generalizations of others. he also befriends enemies or try's to form an alliance with them. but it also because he grew up having people around him that really seats him apart from father because ed has/had family and knows what its like to loose something dear and actually cares unlike father who simply creates a " family" just to further his plan and idea of godhood. plus ed may crave knowledge but he avoids trying to hurt people in the process to get it. father on the other hand views humanity as a primitive evolutionary ancestor that's only good for a resource (philosopher stones). ed values life because he's come close to losing his own on occasion and hates losing people close to him.e cares about life and understands its significance while father views homunculi as the only beings that have a right to exists.
and the end is what sets these two apart. ed is willing to let power go (power=alchemy) because he realizes humans are suppose to be imperfect and there's nothing wrong with that. and family as well.Β father holds onto power for dear life because its the only thing keeping him alive but because he believes he is the pinnacle of an idea of perfection that doesn't exists. and that idea destroys him in the end. and unlike ed, father is completely alone.
