Description
"We were halfway through their second defense line when the traitors revealed their trump card.Ankle-deep in mud, blood and shells of spent mass-reactives, I and the rest of our squad advanced at the back of Sergeant Jeodun over barbed wire and sandbags blown apart by Army artillery. Using the blasted landscape for cover we were making good progress towards the third line of fortifications. Roughly a kilometre to the enemy trenchline, no distance at all. Superheavy armor was rolling past us, prepared to crush the enemy under their tracks if they must. Legion Baneblades and their variants charged across the broken field, smoke belching from gigantic engines that roared like legendary beasts of old. Their weapons were already trained on traitor strongpoints and heavy emplacements.
Darkness gave way to the light of a supernova as a Shadowsword was speared by the brilliant lance of forgotten thunder gods. Volcano cannon capacitors overloaded and the detonation sent the hulking war machine's disintegrating hull hurling through the air with a deafening boom. The rolling mass crushed several Legionaries into the mud and came to a stop some metres from an advancing Baneblade. Mere seconds later a Fellblade had its turret torn off by a similar spear of light. In the dark skies ahead we saw the flash of impossible colours and energy discharge like in a thunderstorm. Void shields. Soon enough the rumble of war horns announced the presence of battle engines on the traitor side of the battlefield. Defaced with spikes impaling the corpses of slain foes and daubed with the Eye of Horus, two Warlord Titans strode from the night as if daring us to take one step further. Our armored spearhead became a shooting gallery as the traitor engines opened fire."
gonna do a series of black and white scenes like this,Β haven't done stuff like this before and the lack of color opens up new possibilities when it comes to composition and lighting. and yes, i am deliberately also imitating the style of old 40k art.

If I may. The space marine does not use the baneblade, they use the Fellblade which is much more effective
Your work is just excellent

the Legions had access to all superheavy tank variants and some of the Legions - the Ultramarines, Sons of Horus and Iron Warriors in particular - made good use of them when dealing with fortresses, Titans or Titan-sized monsters.

Didn't the production cease for the Fellblade after the Horus Heresy in favor of the Baneblade and it's other variants?

that's one probable reason. i also recall reading that the technology behind the Fellblade's accelerator cannon was lost in the war.

pretty much, plus apparently the now-rare hover technology isn't all that trusted in the paranoid post-Heresy Imperium due to it being associated with insidious xenos, primarily the Eldar.

yeah, if you haven't read the Rise of the Primarch yet read this no further as there is spoilers
That might change due to Guilliman firing some of the high lords of terra and I hear he sent Cawl to open the vaults of mars by his command.

Aw the good old black and white 40k. Kind of miss it now with the new color artwork. Not that the color is bad though.

Unless the smurfs have titans of their own in this case, there's no way they win. Two warlords?

I didn't actually do all that much in post, just drew the effects and the glow in the sky, and then added the greyscale filter, some bloom and contrast.

Lord Joazzz, teach us humble aspirants how one can achieve such mastery!

this one was rather simple.
i had exactly two main light sources - my initial vision was that the scene would be lit mostly by the exploding tank, but that left the foreground Marines too much in the shadow so i put another lamp behind them, on the left. two main light sources total, enough to bring out character and object silhouettes, and that was all i needed. added some additional lamps that pointed at the exploding Shadowsword from under it to create the illusion of it being lit by the detonation. one light bulb for the plasma gun.
all the effects were painted by hand using regular soft brushes and my custom smoke brushes. also had some splatter brushes for the mud exploding from under the Shadowsword. i didn't have to worry about color since i was working under a grayscale filter.
i had used in-game fog to create an alpha pass for the image, oneΒ that colored everything perfect white but left the sky pitch black, so after using that as a mask it was easy to paint the glow in the background without painting over the rest of the scene.
finished with a soft bloom effect (and some hand-painted stronger glow over the plasma gun and the explosion), a little contrast editing and a sharpening filter.

I own a tablet and basic image editing software, shouldn't be too hard to brew up some shit in anticipation of the new model release with some good ol' Smurfs v. Bookbangers
