Description Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms , a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.

I really like this guy - I was told he's essentially a gentle giant, good-natured and child-like in intellect and personality, but often used in slavery and manual labour.Β  I know the "big powerful creature with flower" is a bit cliche, but I really wanted to make sure that his sweet personality is apparent right from the start!

I want to hug him, piggy back ride on him to go pick pretty foliage together, and come home to bake and share cookies. He is ADORABLE

My first thought was he looks so sweet.Β  Reminded me of Ludo, from Jim Henson's Labyrinth.

I could definitely see freeing them from slavery, and keeping them free and happy.Β  And yeah, kinda reminds me of a (very large) puppy, eager to please, just wanting praise and attention.

Aww, I can see that :3 <3Β  Thank you very much!

I really enjoyed making this guy, because as I said, I really love "beauty and the beast"/"gentle giant"-type characters and creatures.Β  Big strong monsters with hearts of gold, hehe :bΒ  I was never a big fan of princess-y stuff or romance novels or things like that, but gentle giants I love :bΒ  Make me want to take them home and take care of them, and one day they'll rescue me from a bad guy and squash him good

*chuckles* Yup, and very large puppies are adorable <333Β  i.imgur.com/de4YL9u.jpg

You're welcome!

Yes, the gentle giants are awesome people, no matter what they look like. (At one time I had a pair of real life gentle giants; couple of Shire horses.Β  They were younglings, only 3 & 4 years old, but already 17.2 hh! Sweet as can be, too!)

Adorable puppy in that pic!Β  (Tho I can see that the puppy looks larger than he is due to the way the pic was taken.Β  Gotta love perspective shots! )

Awwwwww :3Β  I always wanted a big horse breed like that when I was little (but then, I also wanted a mini Shetland pony, too >_>)Β  I dunno, extra large or extra small things are just so adorable <3

Hahah, yes, it's true, but ignoring the camera tricks, those puppies are actually quite large o_o

Well, I didn't keep the shires.Β  They were a rescue project.Β  I ended up selling them to a carriage-for-hire company.Β  I did investigate the company first, went to see their other horses and their facilities.Β  They seem to have lots of well fleshed, happy & healthy horses, so I suspect the boys are in good hands.

I did have a miniature horse stallion as a house pet for several years, before I moved to Oz.Β  Couldn't afford to bring him (or my saddle horse,) with me when I moved, so I left them with my former house mates, because they were both farriers, loved the horses, and I knew they'd be taken care of.

Yes, those are indeed big, fluffy puppies!Β  Adorable, too!

I have been very fortunate indeed!Β  When I ponder all the critters that have adopted me, or just trusted me for the short time I knew them, over the years, I am amazed, and flattered. Talking about them in detail makes me sound like a braggart, tho!

Ooooh!Β  When you get your puppy, I'd love to see pics!

jocarra In reply to CarpeDraco [2014-11-25 01:28:01 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, that's okay, even if it makes me a bit jealous, hehe Β  I just love animals, so get a bit doe-eyed talking about them, since I can't really have anything more than my reptiles right now :b

Haha, I'm almost certain to upload at least one or two puppy pictures, when we finally get one :b (even if it's not the giant bear-dog breed we were hoping for!)

CarpeDraco In reply to jocarra [2014-11-26 00:06:06 +0000 UTC]

I can talk critters for hours... about the ones I've been fortunate enough to meet, and ones I've heard about, and I also love listening to stories about people and their experiences with critters.

Yay for pics (eventually)! Β  If your heart is set on the breed, hold out for it.Β  Nothing worse than 'settling' for something your heart isn't completely on, and then having that grain of regret festering in the back of your mind.

*nods*Β  I mean, there are other breeds I'd be really happy with, I think - it's mostly Casey who's a bit picky.Β  He's more of a cat-person, wants a more independent, less-needy dog breed, but also one that is large in size and has a strong presence, so a bit more limited with him :bΒ  The only breeds we're both not fond of are small breeds, really.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CarpeDraco In reply to jocarra [2014-11-26 00:39:27 +0000 UTC]

I can go along with that!Β  Little dogs can be cute, but I'm not a fan of them.Β  Too often I see them as bark-rats, and pests.Β  If I'm going for something that size, I much prefer a cat!

Yeah, both my hubby & I agree that if we ever get a dog, it will be a larger breed. Possibly a German Shepard, as those are the ones he grew up with.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to CarpeDraco [2014-11-26 01:09:35 +0000 UTC]

*nods* Yeah.Β  I mean, I had a little spaniel growing up, super gentle and sweet, so I know they can be really nice dogs.Β  Just like the aesthetic appeal of bigger ones, and plus some of the little ones seem either less intelligent, more spastic, and less well-behaved :b (although the last one is often not the dog's fault, obviously)Β  Really problematic in a way - a little dog jumps up and barks and nips, but if a BIG dog did that, it might very well get put down.Β  Really, the standard should be similar - just because your dog is little doesn't mean you should let it be disobedient and behave badly.Β  The worst are the people who thinkΒ  their dogs are entitled to behave that way, and will actually yell at YOU when their dogs do something bad.

Same kind of person who are often bad parents, too :bΒ  Of course, that's a whole other rant! x_x

Awww, German shepherds have always made me feel a little sad, because the first one I knew was a military dog that had to be "retired" (put down) at age 5 because it was too old ;_;Β  Not even their trainers are not allowed to adopt them.Β  Always think of him for some reason whenever I think of German shepherds.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CarpeDraco In reply to jocarra [2014-11-27 00:27:25 +0000 UTC]

I agree, the majority of problems I have with small dogs is really with the kind of people who have them and don't bother to train them.Β  I often think those kinds of people should not be allowed to have pets (or kids) until they've gone through training on how to take proper care of them, and how to raise/train them to be safe in polite society.Β  (Good thing I'm not a "Mighty Evil Overlord" - I'd be a very hated tyrant... )

Sad, that!Β  And 5 isn't that old.Β  My MIL has a GSD that is old; she's about 13 this year, and is having trouble with her hips.Β  My MIL said it's likely the dog won't last the summer.Β  Either she will die on her own, or will have to be put down for QoL reasons.Β  (There have been a few days she has trouble getting up, and walking.)Β  But I think they are awesome dogs, too.

He seems so sweet and gentle. i think i would have to run a campaign dedicated to freeing them from slave labor. Other wise it just doesn't feel right to leave them chained up as slaves

jocarra In reply to qutera [2014-11-21 21:18:07 +0000 UTC]

Awww :3Β  That would be cool.Β  I bet they'd want to join your group afterwards, and then you could have like a whole NPC army of Groms o_o

In all honesty, though, they make me think of dogs, I imagine?Β  They just want positive attention, and if you give it to them, I'm sure they'd be happy workers/companions/followers Β  Sorta makes me think of Hodor in a way :b

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

qutera In reply to jocarra [2014-11-21 21:33:32 +0000 UTC]

I could see that, having an army of like groms following you because you treat them nicely and free them, and positive attention would probably go along way with them. I would so start up an anti-grom slavery rebellion, and take over the world by storm educating the wold how groms are sweet, and we can all co-exist with out using them as slaves.Β

jocarra In reply to qutera [2014-11-21 21:38:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, seems unnecessarily cruel :bΒ  Groms strike me as the sort that would be happy to work just for a kind word; don't need to beat them or chain them up :b

qutera In reply to jocarra [2014-11-21 22:02:23 +0000 UTC]

True that, however maybe its other creatures like goblins that chain them up because they are weak and need some kind of brute force to help them out? I mean i couldn't see any intelligent civilization using them as slaves, however i could see other monsters using them as slaves for power, or what not.Β
