Description
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms , a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.Any hope of subduing him is false; the mere sight of him is overpowering. Who can strip off his outer coat? Who would approach him with a bridle? Who dares open the doors of his mouth, ringed about with his fearsome teeth? His back has rows of shields tightly sealed together; Strength resides in his neck; dismay goes before him. When he rises up, the mighty are terrified; they retreat before his thrashing. The sword that reaches him has no effect, nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin. Iron he treats like straw and bronze like rotten wood. Arrows do not make him flee, sling stones are like chaff to him. A club seems to him but a piece of straw, he laughs at the rattling of the lance. He makes the depths churn like a boiling cauldron and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment.
Nothing on earth is his equal—a creature without fear.
The most important thing while designing this creature was that he needed to feel MASSIVE - not just big, but heavy and unstoppable. While I didn't follow the descriptions exactly, my main source of inspiration was the original biblical description, which I've included in part above.

WELP!! I'm dead if I see this...
Also, I know where you got the description of the Leviathan. It's in the Bible in Job 41. It's very awe inspiring and one of my favorite chapters...
Nice work, though...

Well, now my fear of underwater creatures is no longer unfounded. Now to figure out how to fight this thing if my GM decides not to pull any punches. *Makes coffee* This isn't going to be easy.

*chuckles* I don't think the fear of underwater creatures is terribly unfounded to begin with Humans are pretty vulnerable in the water :b Even a lot of the weapons we've invented tend not to work well underwater! At least in this world there's magic

Seems to fight this thing you'd need a lot of high powered explosives and a lot of magic, a poor knight would probably just get cracked open like a pistachio and swallowed whole.

Also, mmm, pistachios...

I think the real question is this: how can anyone in this setting be insane enough to go out into open water when there's the possibility of monsters like this, among others to boot, lurking in the depths?

lol, they're probably fairly rare? Maybe the sort of creature that only pops up every few centuries!

Well, I didn't like the ocean, and now this only makes it worse!
But still awesome artwork!

Of your works so far, I think this is one of the better examples. I like how it makes me feel a bit eerie, having a massive set of jaws rising up on a rather large (by real world standards) sailing ship, but unable to actually tell just how massive the creature is that those jaws belong to.
Well done.

EPIC, AWESOME AND ALL-AROUND OMINOUS DESIGN
You've definately portrayed him as he should be: titanic, unstopable and a pure destructive and chaotic force of nature
This will be a boss monster, i reckon?
I hope Behemoth, Ziz and The Abrahamic God get their chance to be drawn

Thank you very much! I'd also love to draw the behemoth and ziz, but I doubt I'll be drawing the Abrahamic God :b - while we draw from a lot of different mythologies, one of the ER team leaders is, I think, rather uncomfortable with religion, so I doubt we'll be doing that :b

Well...that'll ruin your day for certain! Well done!
Looks as if the alien ships/troop carriers from the Marvel's Avengers movie was based on this guy. Not quite the same looks, but definitely the same 'feel' of bloody huge and indestructible.

Oh yeah! I thought those were cool :b Kinda like flying space leviathans rather than normal oceanic ones. Anyway, thanks

This is awesome reminds me of the ceadeus in monster hunter, it has a epic megladon jaws thing going on! which book of the bible is those verses from?

Thanks a lot! I've never played any of the Monster Hunter games, but I've always wanted to :b Not so much sharks for the jaws themselves, I was definitely inspired by the look of ancient placoderms for the design, and that "big gaping mouth" feel of sharks and whales when they're coming for something :b
The verses are from the book of Job.
