Description Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms , a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.

The art director wanted a treant that was "more of a large, thick, ancient tree, rather than the skinny ones we tend to see today" - I think this particular treant is maybe a bit bigger than she originally intended, but I like him that way :3

Love the gentle lowering of the branch to the elk as opposed to the massive size of the ent. Gorgeous piece!

I think he looks amazing. I wish there were more trees like this, old and ancient.

Thank you kindly Β  Yeah, it's always tragic when they're cut down, knocked over, or grow sick and die - they've seen more than we ever will!

I agree! I always wonder what really old trees have lived through whenever I see one

Yeah, I'm sorta like that, too, although perhaps I'm a bit numb to it, since going hiking/camping in the forest leads to a bit of a tree overload, and it's hard to wonder about the individual life story of the thousands of trees around us Β  But it's definitely something we think about - how this has been around for so long, and it's possible that in a decade, it might be under threat or gone

I don't go hiking as much as I would like to, but there is a wild space near me which is lovely (especially as I live in a city, it's like an oasis of wild land), but has only a few really old and gnarled trees like the one in your picture but no, I couldn't think of the life story of every single tree! xD
it's so sad to think of beautiful old trees like this one disappearing, they might not be there for the next generation, so many wild places are under threat too.

*nods*Β  I'm fortunate enough to live in BC, which has a vast amount of untamed forest and mountain, but it gets harder and harder each year to get to places that aren't filled with more and more hints of civilization.Β  What were once remote wooded lakes in the mountain are now resort towns filled with expensive luxury cabins, what were once quiet beaches known only by a few are now havens for grad parties and excessive littering.Β  We always end up coming back with bags of garbage left there by other people =/

Yes, it's really sad to see cabins and lodges appearing in what was peaceful, wild places that everyone could enjoy. It's good that you pick up the garbage, though! Most people see it and leave it :/

It's kind of a pet peeve of ours :bΒ  We don't literally pick up everything as we go, but we'll often pick up big major things wherever we are - crossing the street and seeing a big empty Big Gulp rolling around, we'd probably pick that up and throw it out; that sort of thing.

I do that in my heath, but luckily people don't seem to leave too much lying around. What does happen though is people seem to toss stuff at bins and then not care if it goes in or not, which means that the bin is surrounded by a circle of rubbish, even if the bin is not full. That annoys me, because how much extra effort is it to actually place it inside the bin? ><

Oooh, awesome! This one would easily blend in with the forest...until he wanted to make his presence known, that is.Β  Love the colours and textures...and the tiny elk!

I'd probably get in trouble trying to climb him...

jocarra In reply to CarpeDraco [2015-09-02 07:53:29 +0000 UTC]

Heh, yup :3Β  I obviously don't quite know how exactly they will work in game, but I could see their faces practically 100% disappearing when they don't feel like "being awake" or interacting with mortals or something, so that they're actually visibly indistinguishable from other trees.

Thanks!Β  Again, I think I benefited from Casey's appreciation for trees on this one :b

Heh, I actually don't think he'd mind too much!Β  So long as you weren't ripping a bunch of branches and bark from him as you go.Β  Trees are probably pretty used to things sitting/climbing/moving on them, recognize it as good for their lands.Β  Probably would hate elephants, though :bΒ  A herd of elephants can absolutely massacre copses of trees, although African trees are often on the smaller, thinner side - at least, compared to this guy :b
