Description
Player class artwork for Endless Realms , a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.Once a secretive order of assassins, the Peacemakers have since become highly skilled, extremely mobile fighters specializing in all forms of ranged weaponry, often called upon to take out strategic targets, "fix" problems, and execute other special jobs with tactical precision.Β Here we have a Skidi Peacemaker demonstrating his acrobatic archery prowess

I yuite dislike all those "assassin Guilds", but i do like the peacemaker as a ranged fighter. Quite nice to play and i'm totally for agile Charakters.

*nods*Β Well, they're an ex-assassin guild so it's sooooort of different? Heh.Β Thank you very much
Β I also really like agile ranged characters - it's a lot of fun to run around harassing enemies while they can never seem to get to you or hit you XD

I do have a knack of agile characters as well. They do have the style-bonus and in P&P RPGs you can do quite a lot of awesome things, if you are agile enough. ^^ Multiple Hits, or Hit-and-run tactics are both quite nice.

This is amazing. This pose is so fluid and dynamic and it's really inspirational. Would you mind terribly if I used this as a pose ref for an exercise with my archer OC?

Thank you kindly <3Β I myself was inspired by an image of a female rogue flipping through the air while stabbing some poor sod below with a sword (although for the archery aspect, I used photos of myself as reference - this guy is totally using my long bow, as a result ) ; go ahead, I say

XD Well then you have a very impressive long bow. Yay! Thank you muchly! x3 And I enjoy the irony there, you being inspired by a picture of a lady, and then drawing this lovely guy who in turn has inspired a pic of a different lady. XD fav.me/d8lml3b fav.me/d8o78rm Crow does have a heart, but ultimately she's all discipline and taking names, and this little fancy flip n' shoot is something she would definitely do in the proper situation lol. XD Besides, I need more practice. Archery makes for some really nice art but it's also tough lol, and most gogle searches I've done have really only produced a handful of different angles/poses.

Neat character, I like the skull helm/mask :3Β And yes, I've noticed that artwork involving 1) musical instruments and 2) weaponry are often incorrectly drawn, and much to my dismay, looking up reference photos, many of the models are also using them incorrectly.Β Obviously, I don't expect artists to have an innate understanding of how all these things work, but it still super-bothers my OCPD, haha >_OΒ Good for you trying to do your research!
After my wedding, which involved somewhat thematic leather outfits, my hubby wanted to go out and do a photo shoot with our weaponry.Β Many, many photos of me with bows were taken.Β Some were purely for fun and don't involve the greatest posture or proper technique, but it does mean I have a TON of reference material of bows being held at various angles now!

D'awww, Senpai, you're making me blush to have an artist that I respect as much as I do you to tell me that is a massive compliment--I'm not sure how much I can stress that fact. Crow started off just as a romantic interest for another character, but she grew and grew and eventually evolved into my best female OC, and one of my best all around. I may or may not have put a bit of my own wishes into her, but hey, it gives her soul IMO.
And thank you! I learned a couple years ago from some friends how important and rewarding doing the research is, and it's improved my written work and my art in leaps and bounds. ...Speaking of research and references though, would it be possible for you to put some of those photos up as ref for aspiring peeps like myself? I looked through your gallery, but I didn't see any. Sounds to me like it'd be really valuable to a lot of artists, and as far as myself goes, I love my char and I want her to beas believable as possible. If not, no biggie, just thought I'd ask :3

I was actually thinking about it, but a lot of the images Casey is still touching up, fixing the colours to, etc. and I don't know how we'd feel about having all those photos of me up and people using them for photomanips and stuff XD

XD you make a very valid point. Perhaps you could not offer them up for stock, but rather leave them watermarked with a small view size, strictly as reference only? It might be possible that way. XD But, please don't think I'm trying to pressure you into revealing your personal life

Ah, I like that we're staying away from quivers! Quivers, as seen in fantasy, would have been incredibly ineffective. Likely they would have been at the waist and closed, while the archer carried 2-5 arrows in his/her hands. Apparently many held them in the same hand as the bow, as depicted in your art we see here, but apparently the more skilled ones actually held them in the same hand with which they drew the string! I can't imagine the dexterity that would be required for that, surely more than I have.Β

jocarra In reply to Felis-Draconis [2015-04-10 06:38:56 +0000 UTC]
*chuckles* I think you must've seen the same video as the development team :bΒ That video is misleading. He's not incorrect, but he sort of suggests or implies incorrect things.Β Quivers are and were used in real life, because they ARE useful and effective at what they were designed for, which is holding/transporting arrows in a more or less convenient fashion so that archers aren't limited to the number of arrows they can hold in their hands while also holding their bow - there are different styles of quivers, each with their own advantages and drawbacks.Β
He actually does have a quiver, seen at the small of his back - I modelled it vaguely (not that much of it shows here) after some hunting quivers, which are closed on both ends, preventing arrows from moving about and making sound, but are still utilitarian in, well, holding more ammunition than you could otherwise carry.Β Being limited to half a dozen arrows total would kind of suck x_x
And to be fair, most real life foot-archers weren't expected to be able to fight (using their bow) on the run.Β You don't expect SWAT snipers to be able to shoot with the same efficiency and accuracy while also running, just as shooting from the hip allows you to move faster, but is generally less accurate and doesn't let you make the same precision shots as properly lining up your sights.

*nods* In attempt to do research, they watched a YouTube video of a very skilled archer who sorta specializes in trick shots and speed drawing, doing archery while in the air/leaping/etc, multiple shots per second, kind of stuff.Β Very cool, and makes tons of good points and tips for doing what he does.Β However, it seems to have given people the idea that REAL archers don't use quivers, and only nock their arrows on the right side of the bow, neither of which is true :bΒ My husband and I (who both do archery in real life) had to sit down and sort of have a discussion about what sort of things work in what situations

jocarra In reply to Sevian [2015-04-09 22:55:58 +0000 UTC]
Ahh, haha, well, glad you like it Β Since the Core Book illustrations are often a bit more demanding, I decided to go with my more conventional painting style to allow for more dynamic illustrations.Β This also means there's more consideration on how the character interacts with their backdrop (as minimal as it is), which means having a bold, busy texture like the paper background actually becomes a bit detracting :b
