Description THE IMAGE
Luke, dazed upon awakening and startled by the stranger before him, demands to know her name. An illustration from the first chapter of The Tripartitus.
Time: ~20 hours over several sittings
Tools: Adobe PhotoShop 7.0 (airbrush, eraser, and smudge tool), Wacom tablet
Layers: an unnecessarily large number (26)
References: none
Age: 19/20
Preliminary sketch: [link]

THE THEME
The Latin word “tripartitus” describes a whole comprised of three parts. The purpose of The Tripartitus is triple-facetted: to experience the development of Luke Damon, to understand the character of Jayli, and to stimulate thought in the reader. Similarly, its meaning may be applied to the characters alone, their relationships amongst each other, and how this is reflected in the reader.

The single most important relationship in The Tripartitus would be that between Luke Damon (who acts as the reader's eyes) and that character known by most as Jayli (the protagonist). Seemingly cold, dark, with a closely-guarded past and a dispassionate attitude, she nevertheless compels the then-naive Luke to investigate her enigmatic nature, knowing unconsciously that her unfeeling surface is not an accurate reflection of what lay beneath. As he goes through his own experiences and ordeals, changing his perspective (and thus the reader's) accordingly, he eventually comes to know the truth of the one known as Jayli.

The story is a journey to find what truth can be found, about one's self and about those most dear - a search for one's "name" and meaning. This illustration marks the first encounter between Luke and Jayli, a pivotal meeting for both characters for their own personal reasons. They tell each other their names, but what these names actually mean (to themselves, and to each other) is yet to be defined - one of the purposes of The Tripartitus.

the time you put into this shows. The shading, lighting and coloring are very well done. You did the rocks without a reference? Damn...

Thank you very much! Phew, yeah, it took forever, especially those darned rocks! And yeah, they were done without a reference, which probably explains why they took so long *LOL*

Your shading/lighting once again steals the day, Joc. It's just... Marvelous all around, in terms of coloring and lighting. Can't think much else to say!

Something about the guy in the background looks 'fake' but I can't point it out. He looks good on inspection, but something just looks wrong, despite the fact it's perfect. Just a little notation. Nice work otherwise!

Thank you very much The shading and lighting was a challenge for me, to see if I could handle it - I hope I can expand on what I learned from this piece... The guy in the background was a bit of a challenge, in that his face was only a few pixels up and across... Maybe it's his hair, or something about the shadows or something... I know what you mean, though, and I can't quite put my finger on it, either. Thank you for the compliments and the critique!

Lovely. I love the coloring, it shows all the time you put into it. The Tripartitus sounds cool, sorry I'm lazy and haven't read it yet...

Awww, thank you very much! Thanks especially for the compliment regarding the colouring... It was a challenge for me in this piece, and I'm glad it paid off (in your eyes, at least!) Hehe, don't worry about The Tripartitus - I haven't posted the story, anyways. Only just the historic synopses, which can be kind of boring and confusing without the characters.

Looks wonderful, especially with the warm lighting and well-executed computer coloring. Hahah... I'd still suggest the hand looks "slightly dodgy" though... But I wouldn't worry about it... you can always take the moral high ground with such people because it's obviously not the theme of the picture. Great job as usual.

Awww, thank you very much! The colouring was tough with all the lighting, but I think it turned out alright for a challenging experiment Hahah, slightly dodgy? I guess I can deal with that... and it means I get to tease Luke about it. Bonus! Heh, but seriously, yeah, I'm glad it doesn't really stand out in a prominently suggestive manner.

Awww, thank you The rocks were evil! It was pretty much me mucking about with a few texture brushes, then abandoning those completely in favour of (you guessed it) scribbling combined with smudging.

Hehe, I'm glad at least you don't think he looks like he's fondling himself X3. I showed my online friend (who's another semi-crazy person... a lot of my friends are like that ), and he's like, "...he's touching his sh*t." I proceeded to yell at him *LOL* Oh well. It's not like Luke cares.

Much.

heh heh... no, he looks like he's going to grab something to throw at her.. but scribbling and smudging seems to be the way I quess.. lol... my art teacher was like that he used to come into the class room and say 'come on everyone, dots, squiggles and dashes, you need more pictures with dots, squiggles, and dashes' its thanks to him, another 2 art teachers and my mother who taught me how to draw..
sometimes having a GOOD art teacher right at the beginning is the best..

and i'm still loving those rocks... and you seem to have ALOT of crazy friends..

*LHAO* Well, one might argue he was reaching for his blade, so that works too, haha.

And, aww... You're lucky. I'm almost completely self-taught for art, save for observation of other finished art pieces (I've only used two tutorials so far, one for stars and one for planets). I was also taught the Renaissance Masters' technique for oil painting. Other than that... yeah, it was just Jen all by herself

Yeah, a lot of my friends are crazy... bwahahah... (Feel free to ignore the following!)

There's my boyfriend Peter ( [link] ) who wants to be a cop. There's my best friend Patrick , who's a physicist-come-musician and thinks Jayli and Luke are real. There's Casey , a brilliant literature/fantasy-buff who wants to take over the world. My other friends include Angie (the tutu-wearing graphic artist) and a few others... My online friend Matt who's crazy-fun to talk to, and Ulv who's a crazy-fun but loving friend and therian.

that's quite a collection of friends.. well. I guess you know of my real life friends in my journal. and I think the only person I can really slate and give heavy critisim, is ~Mireth my little sister.. lol.. I sometimes wish she was alot older, since I'm the eldest and my sister the youngest, my brother in the middle..

I used to have a best friend who I knew since I was 11.. but she never spoke to me ever since her mother died, in fact she was very agressive to me.. oh well.. even best friends turn sour..

and as for you being self taught in art.. you are progressing VERY well, it's great to see your artwork.. there's alot of anime on DA, there's nothing wrong with it, but I like traditionally drawn pictures, or stylised digital ones, once you see 100 different types of anime, you've seen them all.. sure it's okay to do fanart, but I know of someone who has no particullar style she copies anime constantly,

I emulate different styles, too, just to try different things out and to try to find my own. As I've mentioned before, anime has influenced my drawings to some degree, although I've mostly gotten past it. In my sketches, you can see it in the hair, and sometimes in the eyes, depending.

Kass-Craven In reply to jocarra [2005-05-06 23:06:35 +0000 UTC]

well, bearing in mind.. *ahem* disney worked from real life, and anime evolved from disney, so no matter what we draw people will see something 'animeesque' in it, but your drawings don't show anime, escpecially your luke, and Jayli pictures.
its when someone draws full on anime, the hair, clothes, stance and those tiny little necks and HUGE heads.. lol

jocarra In reply to Kass-Craven [2005-05-06 23:31:28 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you've told me about the relationship between Disney and anime, heh... And I'm rather glad the influences don't really show too much in my drawings, although I think it would be fun to draw an anime Jayli and Luke, hehe X3.

Mochi? I don't think I've heard of that one...
Flying fish roe? I can't remember if those are the small crunchy ones I like, or the big squishy ones I don't want.
Tuna sushi? I like salmon sushi better - more flavour. Mmm, salmon sushi and ginger and soy sauce and wasabi...
Noodles with chicken? Sounds like teriyaki chicken with yakisoba (pan-fried noodles), or maybe udon (big fat noodles)...

Mmm...
