This is awesome! Do you use a drawing tablet? If yes, which one?

Thanks!Β  Yes, I do use a tablet - for this I used a Wacom Intuos, but now I'm using a Huion H610 Pro, which is 1/4 of the price and mostly identical.Β  However, for map work, I'd say a tablet is not terribly necessary if you're good with the pen tool

I usually use inkscape because I do not well with photoshop. I just tried to retrace a map I made earlier only to realize that I was on the terribly wrong layer xD

Thank you for this! I was sort of dreading having to make the map for my character's world because I wasn't really sure how to go about it at all, for the longest time...but I searched tutorials on map making and found yours and it inspired me to give it a try and I'm actually pretty proud of the result! xD

So cool and very useful. Honestly, I loved your Eldamir and Paruda maps, but I always wished that the Eldamir map had been bigger or had close ups. There are so many wonderful little details on that one that are missed or get blurred when you zoom in. Did you ever have any plans on making a bigger version or do you think the one was enough?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to PecosBill [2015-07-31 19:14:30 +0000 UTC]

Thank you kindly!Β  I hope it serves you well in any future map-making endeavours

Oh, the uploaded version is 1200px wide, but the actual full version is 4000px wide, more than 3 times larger Β  Almost all my maps (save my earliest) are done at larger resolutions like these, in order to better allow for large scale printing.

Foolish question, perhaps. Β But would this tutorial be applicable with other applications (GIMP, Pixelmator)?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to necromancerr [2013-11-05 16:02:32 +0000 UTC]

I don't actually know, as I haven't used other programs much at all.Β  I suspect a lot of it is, yes, as it involves things such as planning and design and naming, none of which have anything to do with Photoshop - the only parts that you'd have to worry about "converting" or finding alternatives for are how I specifically do inking effects, I think.

BloodDiva [2013-07-10 18:45:46 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for this tutorial is really helpful though I am having trouble judging distances between my islands, If I wanted an island what was around a 2 day sail away from another island how far part would I a have them? I've never been good at math so its really hard for me to judge measurements .

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to BloodDiva [2013-07-10 19:06:52 +0000 UTC]

Well, depends on what the scale of the rest of the world is, and what sort of technology your world has.Β  Try looking up how fast different boats tend to travel, because "two days away" depends on how fast they move.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BloodDiva In reply to jocarra [2013-07-10 19:10:53 +0000 UTC]

Oh I see and I guess it would depend on what I think is a far distance. Thank you for the tip

This tutorial is extremely useful, though I do have one question: exactly how big do you make these maps initially when you're creating them? Mine is 2600 x 1800 and I still feel like it's too small for the finer details

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jocarra In reply to Ashtiel [2013-06-30 20:20:35 +0000 UTC]

My smallest map has a resolution of 3000x2000 - my largest is 6000x3600.
