This tutorial is just awesome! Thank you so much for making it.
I've only made one map in my life and it took forever! Mainly due to staining the paper by hand, burning the edges of it and hand-painting every little detail two or three times to get the right feel of things.
Next time I'll most def going to use your tutorial, even if I do it by hand, because it is absolutely amazing! Thank you again ^^

Wow, thank you very much! And yes, maps are certainly time consuming O_O So many hand drawn details! And yes, other details that can easily be missed, like making the paper from scratch and getting all the right effects so it looks right, doing fancy, time-consuming calligraphy, designing an elaborate compass rose. Maps are crazy time eaters if you let them!

Thanks! Good luck with it And yeah, having a map can be really helpful for obvious reasons if you're doing worldbuilding for a story or something
Gives a way to sort of ground your ideas and give them a context.

No problem!~ I consider myself a conceptual artist. I love creating characters and it would be really nice to design their own world for them to live in^^

This is really helpful! but I was wondering... how do you make those custom font designs specifically, if I don't want to use an already existing font? and what are some existing fonts you'd suggest we use for these types of maps?
--Thanks in advance~

jocarra In reply to LuniChingu [2012-08-24 22:53:53 +0000 UTC]
Err, to be honest, I don't actually make proper font files. I more just draw an example of each letter, then copy paste the letters into place as I need them. I know there is a way to make proper font files, but I'm unfamiliar with the program and how to use it, and I was too lazy to learn :b So basically, I just hand write all the custom fonts.
As for existing fonts, I like serif fonts like Castellar, Book Antiqua, BernhardMod, and fantasy-ish fonts like Arlekino and Benegraphic. There are calligraphic fonts you can look into, and cursive fonts are also good.

That's really helpful! I always loved maps, but they look so boring when you simply draw them by hand.
Do you have a tip on how to draw plateaus? I think it's mostly through coloring, but I'm not sure if it would fit into this kind of map.

It seems the trick to maps drawn by hand are to ensure lots of texture (like use coloured parchment paper, or aged paper or something).
Plateaus in my experience tend to be drawn as a line (indicating the cliff's edge) with sort of (( lines coming down from it to indicate the vertical cliff face. But yeah, they're sort of tricky :b

I am making a map right now, but can you help me a bit with names etc?
It's really hard...

Haha, it definitely can be after a while :b Maybe just use some of the tips I included for coming up with names, if you haven't already? Just sit down and make a long list of all the interesting names you can come up with, and pick and choose the best ones. Look through a dictionary or atlas or encyclopedia, and pick out interesting words, then combine parts of those words together ("cytosine" plus "imaginary" equals "Cytonar" or "Sinimag" etc.) Pick an interesting word that fits the city and then find out what that word is in other languages ("wolf" could be "Loup" or "Ulvar" or something).
