Description Late to the bandwagon, but I did Undertale fanart.

Firstly, in case you didn't catch it in the image, please don't spoil anything in the comments.  I take spoilers very seriously and I will shut off comments at the first sight of them.  But please don't make me have to do that.  ^_^

The spoiler thing is important though, because I've never technically played this game (I don't normally like gaming on my computer).  But I did happen upon the demo the other day and finally decided to at least try that.  I was... immediately in love.  The atmosphere, the music, the characters (the demo consisted only of those in the image)... just everything captivated me right off.  I laughed.  I cried (twice).  My mind was blown a little.  And that's just from the half hour demo.

So even though I was previously content to dodge spoilers while waiting for a console version (which, to my understanding, could very well never happen), I'm kind of invested now.  I know I'm going to have to give in and play this real soon.  But for now, I really need to focus.  Thing is, it's so in my head right now.

Hence the fanart.  When I get a new story idea that I don't want to work on right away, I tend to draw the lead character(s) to clear my head so I can return my attention to the comic.  It usually works.  So let's see if it works with other people's stories too. XD

As for the art itself, I primarily used sprites from the demo as reference for the characters (and a screenshot for the background).  For the most part, Toriel, Flowey, and Napstablook are pretty directly how they appear in the game.  The player character (whom I named "Lynn"; I don't know what their actual name is if they have one) has a little bit of artistic license.  I'm to understand that the player character's age, gender and ethnicity was left purposely ambiguous so the player can insert themselves in whatever way makes them most comfortable.  So OF COURSE my head canon of the protagonist is a little trans girl (would you expect anything else from me?). XD

Anywho, eventually I'll actually play this.  And when I do, there's a good chance I'll draw more.  But for now, just a cute, little pic and back to Rain!

So cute ;D
I feel like Undertale is less of a game more of a visual novel, though the fighting is interesting people love it for the CHARActers (sorry caps mess up), music, enviroment and overall plot

I am, of course, super estatic that you've finally started playing the game, *and* of course, that you like it, but I feel like I sort of owe you an apology at the same time.

It's just human nature for folks to reccomend things and activities they like to their friends, and, with Undertale being so charming and unique as it is, that happened a *LOT* in its case... But, at the same time, it clearly happened in a much, much bigger way than its designer, Toby Fox, had possibly imagined it ever might. As well-meaning as I was, I, too, eventually wound up contributing to that "hype train" that tends to make folks leery of the game nowadays, just like so many others.

Is the game truly "THe Best Game of All Time", as it's winning of that infamous GameFaqs poll seems to indicate? No. Of course not. The reality could never possibly match an idealized image of *that* magnitude.... At least, not for everyone. I still think it's a very, very good game overall, that does a lot of things that not many other games do, but, even liking it as much as I do, I know that the game was still the freshest thing in the minds of a lot of the folks voting in the poll, buoying it to the top, and I'm still reigned in enough to accept that a lot of other games have their own aspects that are just as good, if not even superior to Undertale.

Basically. I just apologize if I, in the face of all the other omnipresent hype, that my own reccomendations came off at all pushy about trying it. The game really is designed for it to be discovered and enjoyed at your own pace... not feeing pressured into it by the masses. So, I really hope for the best that, despite the glut of internet gushing and spoilery comments and fan-art about it, that you are able to do just that, and just have fun with it.

The inherent problem when talking about undertale is that the first  few MINUTES of the game is a big spoiler. Nevermind the rest of it, the first few minutes you play can get spoiled and lessen the effect the game has. I went into it blind and fell in love with it within that few minutes.

I don't think there will be a console port any time soon so i'd personally just reccomend caving and playing on the pc(though i'd def reccomend using a controller if you can). there's certain aspects that would be difficult to translate to the console medium.
ALSO SPOILERS: THERE ARE DOGS IN THIS GAME AT SOME POINT. OH MAN I AM THE NAUGHTIEST WEASEL IN THE SHOE FARM.

bludythunder [2016-02-13 11:22:37 +0000 UTC]

I went into this game completely blind. The only thing I had to go off of were a couple of tweets about the game saying that there was "a dark path" and if I went down it, I'd "have a bad time". So I went into undertale expecting (hilariously enough) it to be a horror game. The opening to the tutorial didn't help change that and throughout all of the ruins I was convinced that *spoilers* was trying to put me into a false sense of sucurity and kill/eat me when I let my guard down. Trying to escape the ruins with my life, I ended up doing "the thing", and if you've played Undertale, you know what thing I'm talking about. At this point I still wasn't trusting anyone of not being out to get me (I wouldn't realize my stupidity until the second zone), but at the same time, I felt absolutely terrible for doing "the thing". I live with my mistakes though, so soldier on, no reloading. Throughout the rest of the game, that feeling stuck with me. Whenever anything related to "the thing" would come up I'd feel terrible for doing it and terrified that the monsters outside the ruins would find out what I did. It wasn't the game constantly reminding me of what I did either, it was all on my end.
On my second playthrough, didn't do "the thing". It was the most liberating feeling I've ever had in gaming. No more mistakes, no more paranoia, no regrets.

Later I found out almost everyone ends up doing "the thing" one their first run. I wonder how many others were affected by it like I was lol

Tiruin In reply to bludythunder [2016-02-14 04:51:41 +0000 UTC]

I didn't do 'the thing' back then because I constantly loved "that one mechanic to the right" and fought on in order to make that happen

But I'm still affected because I'm a gamer who loves choices, and Undertale gave that exactly as it was (the big thing in mind though is metaknowledge. Hooray most other games for not leaving that much choice D: So 'weakening the foe' usually is put in mind. No spoilers on that note though!)

What affects me the most is how the game leaves you being responsible. It doesn't impose, but you--as the player with your own morals and other principles--are an integral part on the game's affect. It's awesome that way \o/

I'm happy to hear you like it.  This was actually a pretty challenging piece for me too, because I don't normally draw non-human characters (well, I think I can draw decent rabbits too, but that's definitely it).  When I finally finish the game, I may actually pointedly try to do a group shot of all the major character to really try some new things artistically.

Who knows?  I may need to know how to draw non-human characters better someday... >_>

When I heard cinnamon-butterscotch pie in this game tbh I thought it sounded revolting, so naturally I had to attempt making it just to find out how bad it was and I was SUPER SURPRISED because actually it turned out to be a pretty good combination.

Quick tip: Do the "True Pacifist" route first (as in no killing). Then do some neutral routes.

Have to say though, it's weird to see art of the Undertale character with OPEN eyes. xD

I can't get into this game. The hype machine has put me off so much...(Just like it did with Five Nights at Freddy's.) Plus there are aspects about it that I find...not exactly eloquent.

This still good art though, don't get me wrong. I'd love to see you draw a Grave Robber from Darkest Dungeon though. ^_^

I should probably draw that sometime. (I never will...)

JocelynSamara In reply to JamieAgathaRose [2016-02-12 23:08:10 +0000 UTC]

It's okay.  To each their own.  We all have at least one super popular thing that we don't care about.  I didn't really care for Five Nights at Freddy's either (although in fairness, I also hate jump scares, which is pretty much all the game is).

Grave Robber and Darkest Dungeon, I'm not familiar with though.  I suppose I may have more things I need to look into.  XD

JamieAgathaRose In reply to JocelynSamara [2016-02-13 05:03:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah. Darkest Dungeon is awesome. Very atmospheric, very creepy, and very challenging. You have to manage your heroes stress as well as their health, and there's no resurrecting them. Once they die, they're gone. The VA work is also incredible. It is a really hard game though. The second tier of boss fights is giving me a lot of headaches.

Lemme link a pic of the Grave Robber. She's my favorite hero. Very stylish in the face demonic abominations and otherworldly insanity!

If you want to know more about it, Totalbiscuit did a WTF is..." on it.

Wiinner159 In reply to JocelynSamara [2016-02-13 04:06:03 +0000 UTC]

As another Darkest Dungeon player I'm telling you right now that if you get too attached to characters and aren't the best strategist, run as far away from that game as possible. It will either completely and utterly kill any good mood you have or leave you quite satisfied with yourself, all depends on your skills and luck, but moreso luck (have fun getting crit!)

Krusing13 In reply to Wiinner159 [2016-02-14 02:47:22 +0000 UTC]

It's kinda like xcom 1 and 2 in the way that you get attached to members of your group and then they most likely get killed by a enemy and then it kills your good mood.

I actually knew about this spoiler you mentioned from playing the demo.  It wasn't technically information I probably would've normally been given.  But I was dissatisfied with something I did in the demo, and went back after I finished it to see if I could not do that.  That explained that little bit of extra info to me.

But I'm going to hide your comment anyway for those who don't know about that yet.

well time to get you excited. The demo bit, that being the ruins, is widely considered the worst part of the game, not saying it's bad just that the other parts are better. By the way, did you fall for flowey's trick? Also, search up nothing for this game besides the actual game download. You will be spoiled almost immediately, that's what happened with me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JocelynSamara In reply to Theultimatenoob574 [2016-02-12 20:21:47 +0000 UTC]

Really?  The worst?  And here I loved pretty much everything about it.  But that DOES still excite me.  XD

Anyway, I know a few select things about the game.  I've actually been frequently listening to the soundtrack (or remixes thereof) while I draw Rain pages over the last month or two, which has gotten me to know probably most of the major characters' names and theme songs.  But that's not really plot, and I don't really have context for any of them.  I've actually done a pretty surprisingly good job of keeping most things beyond that unspoiled thankfully.
