how do you switch the layers to multiply?

in the layers area, click the little bar that says 'normal' then find it from there

I have one last question. I have gotten to the step where you fill in the color of the horse (mine is a palomino), where do you go from there?

Get a good palomino-ee color that won't brighten out too dramatically when you soft light. Put the markings on the same layer. Turn the layer to soft light, then duplicate it to get the amount of color you need. Tinker around with the opacity to get the color juuuuust right then ta-da! your done

Very nice job. It was smooth sailing until I went to erase everthing with the wand thing, and it erased everything

I've just tried this technique - but it doesn't work for me.
I have two layers of the horse's coat - one is the base coat, the other the white (paint) markings. I've duplicated the base coat and set it to soft light, and the four shading layers are on overlay, but when I put the now three coat layers under the shading, only the colour is shaded - the paint markings are left untouched. Is there any reason for this?

hum... i dont quite understand? you do the two shadow layers on multiply, and the two highlight layers on overlay. you keep all the horses colors together, dont separate them. set the horses color(with markngs) to soft light, and duplicate once.
you get it?

it's a nice tutorial
but this isn't greyscale with greyscale you work with the color balance, not with a layer with color on top of it
this is just another way to color your horse, but it's no real greyscale.

well, it is real grayscle (: see, not everyone has a program to change the hues. mine doesnt. so this is an easier way. infact it still is grayscale :3

MelonHeadGirl [2011-08-04 07:10:08 +0000 UTC]
So.... how do you get the shading over the top of the colour? Do you put the colour layer under the shading, or just mess about with the opacity until it works?

jockeyy In reply to MelonHeadGirl [2011-08-04 20:16:54 +0000 UTC]
nope. so do all the horses colors on ONE LAYER. put it right below the lines layer, but about all the rest. set it to soft light. that is what will get you the shading. the dupicate it
