Description
The view from the top of Ultraprison was beautiful. Once you got past the violent scenes in the yard and the strange, surreal-looking buildings, of course. The prison was built on an island, providing for the perfect view of the sun setting on the ocean.
And the Mistress had, oddly enough, never seen it. Until now.
She stood in silence on the balcony, breath taken by the panorama of blues, oranges, and pinks surrounding the volcano.
"Mind if I join you?"
She jumped in surprise and turned. Standing a distance behind her, smiling slightly, was none other than the Warden.
She looked at him intently. His face had a few thin white scars, but other than that he looked practically good as new.
That is, if you weren't looking too closely- which of course, the Mistress was.
There was something odd about his right eye. Something... blank. Glassy. Dead.
She gasped as it hit her.
"Your eye... you're blind, aren't you?" She murmured as the Warden stepped over and stood beside her. He didn't respond other than a rather subtle nod.
The two stood in a cold silence, just gazing out at the sea, before the Warden finally spoke.
"You know, you start thinking about some pretty crazy stuff when you're on the verge of dying," he announced, emphasising the last word. The Mistress turned to look at him, raising an eyebrow.
"Oh? Like what?" she said in a slight monotone, trying not to let her voice crack. Trying not to remember that he was leaving...
The Warden shifted on his feet and looked straight at her, beginning his story.
"Well, ever since I first built Superjail, I've dreamed of making it the biggest, most impressive prison out there," he said flamboyantly. The Mistress decided that now was not the time to tell him that her jail was in fact more impressive.
"But now I...
...I can't imagine doing it alone," he said, voice suddenly turning quiet and serious. The Mistress turned in shock.
Oh, yes, she knew exactly what he was trying to say. But she kept her composure and stayed silent.
"So I won't! Not if I can help it, at least," the Warden said with finality, his voice returning to normal. He made a complete 90 degree turn and faced the Mistress with an unreadable expression.
Inhaling deeply, he asked the question she was waiting for.
"Mistress, will you run Superjail with me?"
...There was a heavy silence in the air as the Mistress fought with herself inwardly.
She had her own prison to run. She had always wanted it to be the best, not a half of one thing.
And yet, every piece, every fiber of her existence longed desperately to throw herself at the Warden, to tell him how she felt, and how much pain she had been in, waiting for him to heal.
But she just stood there, holding herself back, shakily saying only two words.
"I'll consider."
The Warden's eyes- well, eye- had a surprised look in them, but he just looked back out at the now starry sky.
They waited. The Warden and the Mistress, unbearably close, but nightmarishly far.
Suddenly he looked at her, with the most warm, kind, and adorably-gapped smile she had ever seen, and said,
"Okay. Now what's your answer?"
It was too much for her to stand. The Mistress burst into tears, and threw her arms around him, ignoring his pained wince.
"Yes, yes, yes," she repeated tearfully. She buried her face in his jacket and sobbed again.
"I just want to be with you... B-because I-"
She was abruptly cut off as the Warden tipped her face up to his and kissed her.
"-because I love you," the Warden finished her sentence with a grin.
The Mistress took a deep breath and relaxed, wiping the tears off her face. Her pride had disappeared for a moment, but now she could regain it.
She sighed and rested her head on the Warden's chest, who sighed too before wrapping his arms around her.
There was yet another silence, this one lasting much longer than the others. It was broken by the Warden again.
"Thank you," he murmured, planting a kiss on her forehead.
"You fixed me."
